Considering having the flexibility of a portable 12v winch - unsuitable for deep tow out jobs but possibly useful for lots of other things. I assumed eBay and Amazon would be stuffed full of them but not so. Looking for a unit with a fixed hook (to strap round a tree or off a beam) and hook and spool the other end. Looking to buy good not cheap. Wireless saves the nerves too. Cheers, Jim

I opted for a Tirfor style hand winch. Will work when you engine is stopped and battery flat (or you need to save it). They are hard work but will pull in any attitude and are reasonably light to carry. They come in various sizes but the 800kg plus a snatch block to double this to 1600 kg is the best solution for regular carrying. The 1600 kg unit is a lot heavier. The 3200kg unit is really heavy.
I use and aftermarket one similar to this:

The original Tirfor units are much more expensive but you can get them second hand:

But BEWARE, the Tirfor units use an odd cable size, the after market ones use a more common cable so its easier to get replacements.
