My 2 speed ( fancy) series 3 wipers only work on 1 speed , very likely the brushes , a while back I bought a few sets of brushes for starter motor and ended up buying a new starter . I can see that the brushes are made of soft material , I don't see anywhere where you can literally buy the bushes seperately without the wiring , can I sand down the starter bushes and use those , from picture of bushes ava with wiring it looks as if they clamp into copper connectors , I'm originally from Yorkshire , if I can fix it for less , I'll have a go, I don't see any harm in it , if original bushes are low anyway , just wondered if anyone had tried this in the past .

Thanks.

Thanks both , Blackburn that one is actually the one I need , £10 +postage seems very good , however I'll probably still have a go at filing ones I have down , I have issues with replacing things if a good percentage can be salvaged , Im not quite sure why they don't just see the brushes , I'm sure I'll find out in the process , ill let you know , thanks .

Hope your not using an actual file. They can be expensive. Try finding a fallen stick and chewing a pattern in it. It’s much cheaper.

Yes you can file them but its fiddley - easy to crush in a vice, and messy, you get very black.
If you are really keen to recycle it is possible to break up a zinc/carbon D-cell and get the carbon electrode out then file that. I think its just too small for a wiper but it can be made to fit a dizzy cap.

Tried and failed , as mentioned the carbon brushes were just too brittle, also with the wiper motor they are basically square with ridges either side so they can slide , if you imagine they are like a chunky letter H , it was easy to file them down so that the dimensions were the same , however as soon as you start cutting those ridges they snap in half , still it's not cost me anything to have a go , I'll order the new ones , by the way , 1 of the brushes was missing hence only one speed and the others were really low .
