Disco 2 General bone shaker lol

Hey guys,

happy new year to all and let’s hope 2021 gets better!!

my Mrs came a drive in my 2001 disco td5 with me yesterday (very rarely she is a passenger) and a few miles into the trip she said Jesus Christ this disco is a right bone shaker.

Maybe I’d just got used to it but I hate to admit it I guess she is right.

On country lanes and bumpy surfaces it just seems to lack any sort of stability, rolls around, bumps and bangs as the body rolls from side to side.

just after some pointers on where to start, my initial thoughts are ...

Steering damper
Shock absorbers front
Shock absorbers rear
Poly bush kit?

Any thoughts or advice or if anyone has had this similar behaviour?

It’s 20 years old this year so not expecting the ride of a rolls Royce but surely I can improve it

Is it on air or springs?

Springs all round mate

Maybe some softer springs or a few bags of cement in the back

Mine was on air but everything in the back used to jump in the air going over speed bumps.
Always seemed better with some weight in it.

Of course softer springs probably means more body role.

Yeah, Ived been doing abit of reading and it’s sitting on 18inch alloys and this (from other forums/posts) can have a negative effect on suspension/ride harshness.

i am planning on some steel modular and AT tyres at the end of Jan.

so maybe this and shockers all round and steering damper could wield some positives to the ride

Check the rear A frame ball joint & bushes, Ive had discos on air & springs an converted a couple
they are very thumpy on springs very noticeable over potholes rougher roads.
A poly push kit will tighten it up loads & get rid of the 18s & have you checked anything yet like
the antiroll bar bushes or trailing arm bushes.
Has your disco got ACE.

A Frame? On a D2? Maybe you are thinking of the Watts linkage which would be a good other thing to check.
+1 to the rest though!

Its those wheels mate....
Change those out first for some that have some more sidewall and you'd be surprised at the difference it makes.
When I got my second D2, the previous owner had on some huge wheels with rubber bands for tyres from maybe a more modern range rover.
The ride was shockingly bad, with every imperfection in the road coming straight through.
Promptly swapped them for an old set of 16s in storage and the difference was night and day.

I found 18s ruined the ride of the d2, harsh as fcuk and thats being polite!

hope you are right and can’t wait to get my new ones at the end of the month!

Since I’m a cheap bastard I’d check this since it’s free... what is your tyre pressure?

I am running on 18s since I got my car and since I re-modified it to normal height (it had 2" lift) and changed all springs and shocks (shock are all Bilstein now) it is smooth and comfortable.

Found some terra firmer shocks on fleabay.
