What have you done to your Freelander today

Truthfully, I beginning to think there isn't such a sweet spot - Mine is running the Peirburgh MAF, so it's kind of locked in to the ronbox, but I'm already at seven or eight and its still kind of gutless, I suspect if I up it to nine or ten I'm going to start making smoke before I generate any worthwhile poke.

Had the first breakdown in it.

It seems the parking brake has applied itself on the nearside, slamming on so hard it locked the wheel solid, leaving me completely stranded, after a lengthy skid mark.





I'm currently waiting for a friend with a flat bed to take me home.

Well it's home, and luckily the parking brake has freed off enough for me to get the FL2 on and back off his flat back van.

Sorry to hear that the vehicle is still giving you the run around. Did it just apply while driving?? Glad no one was hurt. Looks like it pulled the back round into the verge.

Just my pride. Luckily I was on a 40 MPH section of road. A few minutes earlier I was on the A30 at motorway speed with my 2 youngest daughters, so I was pleased it happened when it did.

Initially when the wheel locked I was doing 40 and it slid straight, but as I slowed down, it started to crab left. I had to drag the locked wheel 20 yards to a slightly wider bit of road, as it initially wanted to stop in a very dangerous place.

No.
The parking brake applied itself, completely without warning.

But it's mechanical, and has a normal "old fashioned" lever between the seats. Technically it's a handbrake, but I use the term parking brake out of habit these days.
The odd thing is how did it apply itself? I suspect there's a degree of neglect going on with the shoes, which was something I was going to address over the Christmas break, but now I've got to sort it before the MOT on the 18th.

I've just ordered a complete rear brake assembly, new rotors, pads, bolts, parking brake shoes and spring/ hold down kit. This will be fitted along with the front rotors/pads that arrived last week.
This means the entire brake system except the hydraulics will be new.

I've ever heard of a wheel locking up like that unless it was an old brake shoe type where the liner came off. I'm sure it was a shock for you.

Happy no personal injury!!!! It was very dangerous...
I had a freelander 2 who the rear parking brake shoes had strange play, like a large slack. I do not know if it's normal.
When you dissamble tell us the reason of the breakdown and bloking.
Fail in the HDC, Hill Ascent... I think that they can operate on the rear brakes, isn't it?

It was a shock Ali. It doesn't appear these FL2's are very reliable, at least not this one.

Thankfully it wasn't a serious incident, as only a few minutes earlier I was going much faster, with the kids in the car.

The parking brake is a shoe based system, and I've read that maintenance of them is often lacking on them.

I'll sort it, and see what breaks next on it.

A pain in the arse to do, especially trying to get the springs seated back in the shoes, I ripped 2 finger nails out doing one!

Quite common for the shoes to either lift off their metal backing or crumble and jam the disk solid.

I had read about rusting pins etc so I fitted all new springs pins linings disk/drum and pads - still a crap handbrake but passed the MOT

I'll find out at the weekend, and document what I find in the newly created FL2 brake thread.

I suspect the shoe material has come off the metal support.
This used to be common on some Peugeot and Citroën rear brakes. I went to many locked rear brakes when I was doing recovery work.

I don't know how the FL2 drive line will handle one wheel locking solid at 40? It's flashing Transmission Fault on the information screen now, so that's something else to investigate.

I'd adjusted the parking brake a couple of weeks ago, in preparation for the MOT. Maybe that's what finished them off?

Thats really bad luck mate... I hope that the transmission (4wd system - not yankee speak for autobox) wasn't damaged, keep us posted and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. When you go to reseat the springs, can I recommend a little tool purchase to you? Beta 1410m - spring pulling tool, absolute godsend for drum brake springs, well worth its fifteen quid purchase price, and then some for the ball aches it saves you from:

I'm hoping so. I don't quite know what happens to a Haldex, if it can't turn the wheel it's trying to too?

I do have a couple of spring pullers, and yes they're invaluable for doing drum brakes.

That's not all the skid mark. It's behind the camera about 15 feet too, it just wasn't safe to take the picture from future up the road.

I expect there's quite a flat spot on the tyre, but let's hope nothing more serious than that.

I was trying to play spot the location from your pics, but I'm beaten. I'm guessing either Foxhole or St Stephen sort of area.

Very close.
I was 200 yards St Austell bound past the Foxhole turning. There's a chap on the left who sells Fiat 500s and the like (actually bought the daughters 500 from him), well the brake locked on just as I rounded that left turn. It was all rather sudden, giving no notice other than a couple of really sharp bangs, the wheel locked, and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. I had to drag the skidding wheel the last 20 yards, to get to a slightly wider selection of the road.

Wow, glad you are all ok. Did you get a chance to see if the wheel was hot ? Binding H/B or coldish H/B shoe failure. Hope there's no other damage to the drive train.

Wow! bet that wasn't the only skid mark it caused!
Glad nobody was hurt .

Put the battery on charge.
Haven't driven it much this year, but may have to as the Disco is going in for an MOT on Tuesday - should be ok but who knows?
Will be buying a 'Fender in January - hoping to keep all 3
