Water droplets in oil filler cap

Hi All

I noticed recently when topping up with engine oil that the filler cap had some cream like deposits inside, I then had a look and could see the same stuff inside the rocker cover. I started to panic thinking that coolant was mixing with the the oil.

However the coolant has remained at the same level for months after I sorted out a leaking heater valve.

So I researched a bit online and found out that it could be due to short journeys. I also noticed the oil filler cap o ring was past its best.

I replaced the filler cap o ring, took off the rocker cover and cleaned off the cream, fit new gasket.

I did about 20 miles at the weekend, and just checked now and could see some clear water droplets inside the oil filler cap...................any ideas what could be causing this?

Take it for a good drive, 20mi is nothing...

Short journeys don't do them any good anyway..

It is not so much the distance covered, but how you drove them 20 miles.
Probabaly need a decent run/thrash to get it hot enough to evaporate all the moisture, though some cars are prone to milky filler caps.

You could fit a rad muff to help it heat up quicker in this weather.

Just a random thought, stat still fitted? runs at normal temp on the gauge?

Italian tune up time if above is correct.

A good steady drive, you'll be surprised how long it takes for the oil to get hot and any water to evaporate.

+1 for getting the engine good and hot and avoiding short trips. But also check the breather pipes are clear and actually connected. There will always be some water vapour in the rocker cover and if the breather is blocked it's got nowhere to go, except to condense inside the cover. I think a bit of condensation is a fact of winter life for Series owners - both inside the engine and in the cab...

Good idea about the rad muff. It has a thermostat fitted. I cleaned the breather but I didn't check the pipes..........DOH!

This weekend was the first time in months that I experienced the steady drips on my head. LOL
