Hi All,

New to the forum so apologies if this thread is in the wrong area.

Anyway, the situation is that my daughter has a 02 Freelander 1 TD4 which is smokey to say the least. Unfortunately she cannot spare the time for me to remove the EGR and Intake manifold for cleaning as she is a teacher and has to travel each day to school. After some research, I decided on a can of Wynns Extreme EGR MAF Turbo Cleaner. The instructions are pretty straight forward in that it says to spray short bursts into the air intake until the can is empty ... My question is, has anyone used this to clean their EGR/Intake manifold and was it effective? I would also like to know where the best place is to spray the contents, i.e. do I remove the air filter and spray directly into the intake on the inside left of the housing, or if not, where?

Apologies for a seemingly stupid question, but have never used a spray for this kind of use before.

Cheers.

i've never used such a spray ..
but don't know if i'd use it pre-maf sensor ..
`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
i'd consider fitting an egr-delete unit ..
takes about 15min .. 4 bolts 'n one clip screw ..
overtime the intake manifold likely to self clean
.. well mine did .. ;-]
if you go the egr delete route ..
here's some pics that will help ..
quick note re. spraying stuff into the air intake ..
keep in mind that the maf sensor doesn't like being spray cleaned
with products that leave any kind of residue ..
as they will have a negative effect on its performance
`````````````
to clean a maf .. i use wd40 specialist contact cleaner .. leaves no residue

I'd fit an EGR delete as suggested. It's quicker than spending ages spraying snake oil in to the intake. ;)
Black smoke is caused by not enough air in the combustion chamber, so it's worth checking the boost pipes for leaks, which would be my first thing to check, assuming they're 17 years old.

All good advice HD3 and agree about the MAF issues. Normally wouldn't use a spray, but at the moment needs dictate. However, it may be worthwhile waiting for the school break and doing it properly.

Very informative photos, many thanks.

Yep, good advice Nodge68, will be checking all pipework for leaks and wear as a matter of course and will replace as necessary.

One thing that bothers me regarding the EGR delete or blanking, is the MoT. Do testers check for this and will the emissions be changed, i.e. increased?

If the MOT tester spots an EGR delete, then it could well fail. Some early TD4 engines had a cover hiding the EGR valve, so it wouldn't be spotted by the MOT tester. The tester won't remove covers, so it's only a quick visual inspection.
There's no emissions test for a diesel, other than a basic smoke opacity test. If it's making black smoke though, it could well fail the MOT.

has the crankcase breather filter been maintained ????
just asking as some owners and service garages neglect to do that ..

does no harm .. in fact the opposite .. to let the engine do some heavy work ..
like a blast down the motorway .. or up some nice long hills ..
'n blow the accumulated-from-slow-urban-traffic carbon deposits out ..

but do make sure the crankcase breather filter is clean first ..

Good call HD3, but changed that old toilet roll for the modified oil separator a couple of weeks ago along with oil, oil filter, air filter and turbo vent filter. Just got to stir up the courage to tackle the fuel filter and all that entails. Next time I get my hands on the FL I'll certainly give it a good old blast.

Hmm, food for thought there. Perhaps I will dismantle the EGR and intake manifold and give them a thorough cleaning and see what that does.
