Steering vibration.. Tyre balance?

Just changed my aging g90s as they were feeling quite iffy in the wet,
Had some Cooper Discoverer STT fitted, garage couldn't balance them on their machine.

It tracks bang on I can let go of the steering wheel and it'll carry on straight, no play in any joints ect I've even put my spare steering UJs on incase they were bad.

But there's a vibration through the steering wheel at all times now,
Down to the lack of balancing?
Ive struggled to get larger tyres balanced in the past with tyre places saying they won't fit on they're machine.
 
Seems strange, my local Kwik fit did my 285 75 /16 BFG muds OK, took a lot of time , lead and messing around, but thye did it.

What size coopers did you get?

I ask them to move the heavy spot round, means deflating the tyre and a few dirty looks off them but they do it.
However
..I have hand made Mach 5's fitted and I expect they are not perfectly balanced without a tyre on!
A ton of lead had to go on the muds I had before I went AT and the AT's not much at all.
OE wheels? Or aftermarket?
 
I've been to kwik fit when I had some insa turbos on the disco and they said they couldn't do them,
I think i actually went to all the local tyre places I knew when I had those,all said couldn't do it.



They're 235/85 R16 on genuine wolf wheels
 
Sometimes its not the tyre size that causes the problem....its the hole in the centre of the wheel thats to big to mount on the machine.

Theres always dynabeads? or a a litre of water :)
 
Well I've been to a specialist tracking place (only place that knows how to check/adjust the tracking on these things!) and they said it would be pointless, you won't ever get rid of the vibration.

Surely that's not correct?:rolleyes:

Place I'm about to get my MOT done, a commercial vehicle garage said they'd need a special adapter to fit on the machine, recommended a place I'd already been to.
 
Had 255/85 BFG Muds on old steel rims balanced ok.

Recently fitted larger Insa Turbo Special Tracks on brand new alloys and the tyre guys could not balance them because there there machine couldnt spin the tyre fast enough to make it accurate(even showed me up close the reading etc).

Interestingly at 50 MPH it has a wobble if I speed up or slow down the wobble goes :) after about 20 miles there is no wobble at 50 so dont know if the tyre corrects itself (is out of round at the start of the journey).
 
Also looked at Dynabeads whats the verdict ? worth it ? or do you just waste your money because some saturday boys rips yer tyre off and they scatter over the workshop because they don't listen.
 
I have DynaBeads inside my insa turbo special tracks.

Bloke i bought a set of tyres and rims off had them inside.

When i changed and put new insa on went to my local independant owned tyre garage and spoke to them, they did it with me in attendance and i got the beads out and put them in the new one.

I have never had any wobble at any speed with them.. work lovely certainly would buy more if i needed to.

Also less spots on the rim for muck and in my case cow **** to congregate and rot the rims..
 
Found a garage (well a recovery company) right by my house with some land rovers outside.. They had the correct center cone for them,

I dunno what it means but one came up with 100 and the other 120,aparantly that was ridiculously out, got it to 0 within a few mins.

No more vibration
 
My local one man band garage fits my tyres and does the balancing, never had a problem. Mind you, he does have Land rovers himself, so that helps.

100 and 120 grams that doesn't sound to bad mine was wanting 900 something ! on the machine and was basically all around the inner edge of the wheel

dyna beads might be on my christmas list then
 
I had steering wheel vibration/shuddering between 40 - 50mph on my 110. Had wheels balanced but no joy. Turned out to be panhard rod bushes. Got them replaced and problem instantly solved.
 
While you look for somewhere to balance them check all the steering and suspension for play then:
Swap front and back in case its just one wheel, if that doesn't work and you are feeling keen put a dob of paint one one front wheel stud nearest the valve, then rotate the wheel 2 studs and see if it helps, then do the other side.
In the end you want balanced wheels but these tricks may help.
