OK I should have noticed but the post wasn't that high!
Anyone have any idea how I can get rid of the deep scratch in the plastic moulding (see photo) other than get a replacement?

Replace them.
The sections are held on by a variety of screws and trim poppers.

The only other option would be to sand it down and paint it.
Raptor paint, truck bed liner paint or stone chip all seem to work well but if you go that way then you'll have to paint all the plastics.

I'll fill the gouge with appropriate colour filler and see what it looks like. If it's a mess I'll replace with a used section which, hopefully, will be a match
