Hi,

my mate has got a Range Rover L405 in his workshop. The engine has seized as the crank bearings have failed. The crank itself hasn't snapped. The car has only done 98000km and everything else is working perfectly.

What are the options?

He is looking to source a reconditioned engine, can anyone recommend a good supplier?

I wanted to help him out as I have a Disco 4 with the same type of engine :(

I believe jag engine or contact Oval Autos, or QP Online, they will at least tell your mate what is and isnt possible.

If you google land rover 3.0 crankshaft failure you will find lots of info, do not mention it to any current 3.0 v6 owner as they get very very touchy!

Didnt one of the Jags have same basic engine.

Yes, same engine. Jags didn't seem to suffer so much but maybe they don't work as hard. Probably not economic to fix it unless you do the work yourself and depends how bad the damage is. Replacement engine off the Bay is probably cheapest. Or find a rear ended write off?

Emotts of Calne are straight for scrappers.

Where's your mate? Just noticed your location is Bedford. ASM in Aylesbury used to be OK, although expensive now. 6 months guarantee on parts though.
I am now mostly living in Slovakia and I haven't been back to Bedford at all this year due to various Covid restrictions. It is a shame as I also wanted to do the NC500 and visit the Scottish Islands. Hopefully next year.

He needs to get the engine shipped over here from the UK. I have been looking at nwsmotorservices.com or turnerengineering.co.uk for a refurbished unit, I wonder if anyone has any experience with them? Needless to say JLR have quoted 30k Euros for a new engine and work... no thanks.

I have certainly googled it after visiting his workshop, seeing the L405 in bits and knowing I have the same engine in my Discovery 4. Mine is on 110,000km at the moment and I am contemplating selling it just in case I run into problems. However, he also has a 350,000km Discovery 3 with a 2.7TDV6 in the workshop (lady owner filled it with petrol instead of diesel), which has been seriously neglected with oil changes every 50,000km...and this hasn't had any engine issues at all! I think it must be a lottery as to the engine longevity. The L405 has been meticulously serviced since new!

One guy on the D3/4 forum summed it up for me, his was the later 3.0, and he said it was like driving around in a hand grenade with the pin pulled wondering when it was going to go off, he could not take it any more and sold the car!

Another guy made a valid point some time back and I reckon he might be onto something, he wonderd if it was an injector issue loading up one cylinder more than the others, thus causing uneven loading on the crank leading to failure.

With the 2.7 you can see the injector balances at idle, on the 3.0 this function is not available!

That russian guy did a paper on it. I think engines in Germany are replaced under warranty?

Gary knows what I am on about and has the links.

I´ve been on the phone to some companies. Turnerengineering don´t do V6 engines. Ovalautos only do supply and fit and it would be very complicated to send the car over and then back again. Nwsmotorservices look promising and they were very helpful over the phone. I am just waiting fro a quote from them.

Whoever you choose do lots of research on them, especially on the disco3 forum, as there have been many issues with lots of the so called engine recon companies.
I can remember one where the guys car disappeared, others where the company has disappeared, naturally after they had the money!
Apparently if the engine has had a crank failure it cannot be reconned as it renders the block scrap.
