Dear Landyzoners,

I fear the clutch on my 2000 td5 is nearing the end of its life span. Although a keen DIY-er I think it's probably beyond my skill level without any on hand guidance. As such I am looking for recommendations in the Tetbury area who would be able to replace it at a fair cost?

Also, should I be tempted by the delightful green paint of LOF clutches? Or will a fairy standard kit last just as long (not remapped yet - but wouldn't mind one). Guessing I need the dual mass replaced at the same time (sadly I have no history on the car).

Thanks for all your help

I can't recommend a garage in that area because I'm not from round there. What I would say is try and avoid the kind of clutch friction plate which has a separate boss in the middle with the splines in. I've had one of these separate from the friction plate, with consequent loss of drive. I seem to remember the one that did this was a Valeo brand. The LOF ones look attractive because the friction plate appears to be all one piece, so won't do this so easily.

I use JC4x4 near Berkeley and have done for quite some time. No complaints and very good service.

LOF clutches get good reviews online for landies too.

I would do as much prep as possible and pay a mobile mech to do the clutch change then put all the bits back. Did this when I needed a box fitted in my Series - I paid until 2 bolts were in the bell housing and the mounts were on, after that it was just spannerwork. We agreed a lump sum, mech was happy as he worked fast and got a good rate, I was happy because I knew what my bill was going to be and I only paid for what I couldn't do. He didn't want to faff about screwing the floor down and I was happy to do this and save money.

Rob, did you have this done in Bath? I'm only 40 mins or so away - if you still knew the mechanic?

You could try Autoworks in Swindon~ 22 miles from Tetbury. They do work on Land Rovers and do a good job. They are not an Indy ,just a general garage.
phone. 01793 886699.
Broad Lane land rovers at Westbury, but you should get a fixed quote as they are an Indy.
good luck.

Sorry, my work was done in Slough, I'm not getting down to Bath much these days. What I can add is that I had to ring round a few mobile mechs to find one who was happy to work with me doing the prep and finish, but once I did it worked well.
