I cut a piece off the block end fitting

So I could get more of a bend on the pipe.
Used a longer piece of silicon hose and it looks like this

Looks just about perfect with the longer pipe! However, just next to my finger you can see the exhaust to manifold flange is very close to the pipe. So, it’s the spare aftermarket one on for the MOT tomorrow and then wait for one from Turners.

Did you try running with this set up? if so how does the oil seem to flow through it can you see through the tube wall with a light behind it.

I wasn’t going to until I spotted your post just before I went out to change it. So, put everything back with my pipe on and started her up. Not good news :( Not a lot of oil coming through, in fact next to nothing until it’s revved and then it still doesn’t look like a lot. Pulled the dipstick out and it’s pushing oil right up the dipstick we high it’s never done before. :eek: Took cap off and it’s not blowing or chugging out of there. Is there a copper washer on either side of the HP oil union to the top of the turbo? I’ve got one one on either side of mine! I’m wondering if that’s right now and the turbo is being starved of oil? The dipstick oil is now another worry :eek:

you need 2 washers for a banjo bolt
 
When I first put the turbo on this afternoon I noticed the HP line had twisted when I tightened the block union.

you can see it in this picture. I took it straight off and gently squeezed it back in to round with pliers and it looked perfect, but I wonder if it’s collapsed inside :oops: That would explain the little oil coming out of the return. Would it explain the oil up the dipstick?

That could be the case, the turbo charger needs plenty of oil because of the operating conditions, the oil is not only lubricating but cooling the bearing and spindle, which gets pretty hot.
It's a worry that you have little oil in the return, but that feed pipe needs sorting.
Pushing oil up the dipstick is strange if you dont have crankcase pressure. I suspect when you crack that one you will be on the home straight.

Cheers, mate. I’ve taken the HP pipe off and checked it with some thick wire with thick plastic insulation. The pipe seems round and unobstructed, so that’s fine. I’ve put my remaining aftermarket return pipe on for now as I need to get it to the garage for the MOT tomorrow. When I could see there wasn’t much oil coming through I think I just had a rush of frustration and anger! I pulled the dipstick and flipped, but having calmed down it might have been standard splatter up the dipstick as I’d only just turned the engine off 30 seconds before. I’m thinking I just didn’t give it time to settle in my frustrated state and jumped to conclusions. I’ve been going around in circles with it for so long I’m beginning to lose the plot I think o_O:confused:

Just dropped it off for the MOT. Interestingly it flew the garage, pulls really hard and turbo boosts up quickly. Turbo seems to be working extremely well. :rolleyes:o_O
 
MOT tester abandoned test as the Landy left a pool of oil bigger than 10cm on the garage floor. He called me and said it was the turbo return pipe to block connection. He’d tried to nip it up, but the pipe just kinked. Don’t I know it :rolleyes: I’m pleased a professional car mechanic couldn’t do it either, it’s made me feel better. Turner’s didn’t have a pipe, but I found a genuine one on Blanchard’s website. Called them up and asked them to measure the braided stainless bit. They were great. Not a problem, give me a minute and I’ll call you back! 70mm long he reckoned and definitely in a Land Rover bag. :) I’ve paid for next day delivery so hopefully here tomorrow.
it’s a good job I’m an alcoholic otherwise this would be wearing me down. :(

you can see the onion isn’t square with the nut yet.
Stopped for lunch then I’ll go out and start applying a bit more force while keeping an eye on the kink in the pipe. Being a bit longer it’ll hopefully pull square without kinking

Right, this is as far as I am tightening it for now.

not perfectly square, but feels tight and no visible kink in the braided bit of the return. Plan is to run it and see if it weeps oil. I’ve cleaned the inside of the inter cooler to inlet manifold pipe to see if any oil blows through to there now. I suppose the acid test is to let the turbo just blow out on to the wing again. Can’t be bothered today though. I’m taking the dog for a walk and setting up a red squirrel camera for some R&R :oops:
