Hi from a newbie.

Freelander 1 Facelift 2005 3 dr.
Its a 3 amigos issues and I've read probably all of the threads on this and still have a couple of questions.
3 amigos on intermittently but now nearly all the time.
Ive replaced HDC switch which wasn't working but is now (2nd hand switch). Ive replaced NSF bearing and I'm on my second new NSF sensor. brake switch puts the brake lights on but I haven't replaced it. I haven't checked the G sensor under the console.

It comes up with a fault on an Autel code reader as the C1016 - NSF speed sensor - electrical fault. Engine management light comes on after a while - 0500 vehicle speed input. When in live data mode the NSF sensor was reading intermittently but now not reading a speed at that wheel. I chopped the connector in the engine bay out and soldered the wires together which made it worse - now soldered old connector back in and fitted new sensor but no different - still not working and very intermittent wheel speed reading on live data. I reckon there is a wiring fault around that area of the loom (sometimes the fault clears and sometimes it won't when sat still after I've been fiddling with that NSF/wiring loom and connector.

so! - Where do the red and red/black wires go once it disappears into that loom?? does it go straight across the engine to the ABS block/ecu. My thoughts are to bypass the loom and go straight to the ECU to cut out the poss fractured wire just to see if I'm right and then replace wire around the back of the bay.

Or - am I barking up the wrong tree!!! lol!

The rest of the vehicle is alright - engine spot on and no major issues but its a workhorse for me and I need it right - next step is to scrap it and buy a Freelander 2 :-(. I don't want to throw a ton of money at it replacing bits that don't need replacing.

Was it the correct bearing for your year? The 2002 onwards have magnets for the abs sensor to detect. The early ones don't. Check part number and report back!!!

Hi - it is the correct bearing. I checked and its the ABS type. It was picking up fine but the more I try to sort the fault the worse it gets! lol! Day after I fitted bearing the 3 amigos didn't come on for around 12 miles - now on all the time.

Yes - for sure. It worked fine directly after I fitted it for around 12 miles came on then went off for another 12. it would have been constantly on if the wrong way round. I like the 'start from the basics' tho - Im fairly sure I checked everything. It did have the fault before the sensor and bearing change.
 
Ok - is this the one on the side of the ABS block on the OSF area of the engine bay?

Yes. The ABS ECU is part of the modulator, where the multi-plug joins it.
You can test the harness from there, right to the sensor plug. It's very unlikely to be a damaged wire in the harness, but it's easy to check it.

Have you read the codes recently?

C1016 - the main one that pops up - NSF wheel sensor.
0500 - Vehicle speed limit.

If I drive it for a while it says all the wheels have signal missing or too low.

All the sensors have been replaced.

I will clean the multi plug tomorrow - that sounds like it could be the culprit.
 
Were the replacement sensors OE parts, or cheap Ebay stuff? Also is the sensor fully home in the hub? The sensor pickup needs to be really close to the flux ring on the bearing.

Unfortunately ebay sensors - the NSF has had 2 now as I cut the wires on one to rule out the connector. The hub was thoroughly wire brushed and cleaned and the sensors seated properly. The bearing was OE.

Do you have access to a diagnostic device that can graph the wheel sensor output signals?

Did you buy a cheap £10 ABS sensor or did you spend more than 40 notes on it?
 
Any chance of swapping wiring so left is right at the abs ecu and see if the fault moves to the other side?
Or running extra cable from each sensor to swap the signals over left to right?
To try and narrow it down to wheel, and module or cabling.

Cost £18 delivered so cheap ones. Do they really make that much difference? I may have to buy a decent one but which brand then if not LR genuine.

Update: I cleaned the multi-plug at the ABS sensor which incidentally looks very clean with no rusty/corroded pins. I swapped the front sensors over and still have the fault at the NSF wheel - so with that done I can isolate the front sensors as being ok? I had a mates Snap-On diagnostic on it which gives a graph of the output coming from the sensor. The NSF one is very eratic but spikes when I braked? - Im getting a new brake switch next.

So I personally would suspect either the ring or the cable are possibly dodgy.
Hi - its a new sensor and bearing (had fault before these were replaced). I reckon there is a wiring problem from the sensor connection to the ABS unit. There isn't a reactor ring on this model.
