P38A Dreaded EAS fault (Max 35MPH) is this going to empty my wallet ?

For the air-bag change first put the axle on stands & remove the wheel. Then raise the chassis until you can fit a 4" or 5" block of wood between the bump stop rubber & the axle. This way the chassis cannot drop, and there's enough room to replace the deflated airbag.

Then get an old paint roller and make a tool to pull out the bag clips. Much easier than pliers.

When my drivers window stopped working it was caused by one green grotty pin on the multi plug going into the BECM.

I also had an issue with a grotty OBD port and something else which currently escapes me... My point was, check for poor connection.
The wires from where the height sensors plug into them on each corner go direct to the EAS ECU. They have no other connection through any plug and socket. So the only thing that can cause a sensor fault is the sensor itself, connection sensor to wire or connection to ECU. Providing the ECU is sound. Agreed that corrosion can cause problems but with EAS only on passenger side white plug which is the interface from selector switch to ECU.
 
Hey Bob, remember when we checked for air leaks around the car while the pump was running? Not a peep. Perhaps it had sealed itself and came out on the journey home :eek: I would have heard it escaping for sure.

Still, at least it's been found. Good job. I'm more than happy to help with anything I can. It's the least I can doooooo :D

Just a wee update.
So I’ve got her jacked up, have managed to remove the rusted clips from top and bottom of the bag and detached the air hose (but may have slightly damaged the end of it ).

the old air spring refuses to bloody move. I’ve got the bottom out of the locator but the top seems fused in.

the clip is definitely out, and I’ve given it a healthy dousing of WD40 so hopefully when the light returns I can prise/yank it out. But I wondered whether anyone has any particular advice or technique ?

the vibration of bump stop driving has cracked my exhaust at the join, so that’s a weld / repair needing done and the number stops themselves are completely shot -I shall do them once I’ve got the EAS back to life and can persuade her to go up high.

It's just a bit of plastic, a pry bar and 0 ****s is what I used to remove my old bags, ;)

If you have slightly damaged the end of the airline, you can shave off around 1mm and taper it slightly with a pencil sharpener to give he new 0 rings somewhere new to seat.

tbats pretty much what I thought.

the damage to e pipe is about 5mm from the end. Is there a metal former which slips inside the plastic ?

If the exhaust is cracked anywhere near the back axle then your air lines probably need replaced cos they melt
 
To be honest I wouldnt bother footering around with the valve block I would email KurtJohnson

Is KurtJohnson an air block guru ?

I’ll see how things look once I get the spring changes over in terms of the air lines etc.

modes the plastic line just go all the way to from the block to the bag ? Is there anything fancy on the end ?

Yes he is The Master.
The air lines are just plain ends but MUST be cut properly and not with a Stanley knife and are one piece from where they come from to where they go

cool... well I did buy a tool specially designed for cutting the airlines -should I need it !

and I’m guessing you can splice a new section in if there’s damage.

Should I seek Kurt out on here ?

Yes you can use a joiny thingy but is not worth it cos just another place to leak

Both retaining clips are definitely out, rusty, but out.
The bottom locator is free but the top is stuck solid.
I’ve pried it, I’ve thumped it I’ve tied rope around it and yanked it.
I’m getting zero movement on the top.

I’m really at a loss and not sure what to try next.

Any and all suggestions most welcome !

Evening all, sorry I haven't been around for a while. Been busy with various things...

Anyhoo, trying to move the air spring top seat is a bit of a dick. Try to get a long long flat screw driver in between the body and chassis leg (I found it easier to remove the plastic wheel arch liner) so you can try to get it between the spring plate and the mount. Then using a plastic or rubber hammer, tap it to prize it away from the mount.

I had to remove 4 of the things and the rear ones were definitely a proper job to come off even though they weren't old at all.

Get some of these Amazon product

Definitely remove the arch liner. Then wedge the large pry bar between the airbag & body so the tip of the bar is pointing down on the top of the airbag plastic. Next pull hard and the bag should pop out.
 
Finally got it after an almighty thwack.

gad hoped popping the replacement in would be straightforward a d I seem to have it ‘almost’ aligned but the top just isn’t quite protruding far enough... a wee bit of manipulation perhaps or maybe the weight of the vehicle will help it find its home properly !

going to go gently as I don’t want to damage the bag and, worryingly, the old one didn’t seem to be ‘holed’ /maybe that leaking exhaust has melted a plastic pipe somewhere....

But that’s a job for tomorrow and the light
