Great instructions, I was considering throwing in the towel and calling in the pro's, but if the first step is as you have listed I may continue on this journey a little further.

These are screen shots straight from the manual.
These will point you to the module that need to have the connectors and wiring checked.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Nodge, that's spooky I have quite literally been looking at those exact pages on RAVE when my phone goes 'ping' checked email and new reply.

Hi guys,

Finally had a chance to have a look this problem today and as far as I can tell all connections seem fine. I tried using my new icarsoft i930 to access the abs ecu, only to receive the message cant connect to abs ecu. I have connected the scanner to an identical freelander and have full access to the abs ecu. Does this point towards an abs ecu replacement (module only or full kit) or do I need to call in a pro to further diagnose this issue?

Any and all advice most appreciated

Ideally you would need to substitute the ABS module before buying a replacement. Have you checked the connection inside the ABS multiplug?

Thanks for sticking with me Nodge, I've physically checked the multiplug and all appears fine. In your opinion would my best plan of action be to change the module first, would an error here prevent me from speaking to the ECU? Found ABS pump module on the flea for £35, much cheaper than the £170 ECU kit

Just thought, would there be any issues if I put the ABS module from my other working car to test if this resolves things ?

What age is the problem car?

ABS system changed between 2001MY (Teves Mk20) and 2002MY on (Teves Mk25) - are you selecting the right option?

You could try swapping the ABS unit. There are a few places where communication can be lost. Have you made sure that the Ipack connections are secure as all bus data routes through the Ipack ECU.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the Ipack the instrument panel? If it is then yes checked the connections and all are ok

Just read codes with the new reader to see if it can pick up anything my elm327 didn't and omg there are 7 of them. P0100, P110, P1602, P1260, P1643, P0500 and P1637 after searching on these codes either I have a lot of work to do or this issue is throwing up many faults. Can't get out today to swap the ABS pump module over, but will try to get it done tomorrow. Spoke to an auto electrician to get a pro to identify the problem and he told me that all he could do would be to send the ECU off to test. I thought they could use an oscilloscope to test the CAN bus??

Big thanks to nodge and nodosh for your help, this issue is now fixed. For anyone with a similar issue, it was the ABS ECU modulator. Removed existing one replaced with another and all is ok, had to clean up the connector as was covered with oil.

Will, if you're still on here, was this an easy task to do? I've got the same things going on and I'm looking at the whole ABS Modulator for $60. What steps did you take?

Looking at the system, me thinks i have to:

1. bleed the brake fluid.
2. unhook the electrical connector, disconnect the brake lines
3. Remove the old modulator
4. Install new modulator
5. Reconnect lines and connector
6. Refresh brake fluid and bleed out the air.

Is it really this simple or am i missing more steps?

Probably disconnect the battery before starting, just to make sure it doesn't throw a code when you disconnect the electrical connector. Not sure on anything else of the job. Vacuum bleeding or pressure bleeding may be needed, rather than just pump and pray.
