Afternoon all,

As per title, I've been offered a low mileage Ex-Military 2.25 Petrol Engine with Weber Carb + axillaries. Hasn't run in a couple of years. What do you think it's worth?

Do you know what mileage it has covered and is it possible to test the compression? A knackered engine is only worth scrap or the second hand value of the ancillaries but a known good one might be worth £300 to £500. Good ones are becoming rare, especially petrols.

Holds compression fine. I thought initially about £500 but there's one on ebay going for £1200!!!

So many have been scrapped, being considered worthless, that the remaining ones can only go up in value. I have an engine like yours from my 109 FFR which now has a 200 lump in it. Now that there is so much hostility towards diesels there has been a 180 degree turn in opinion of the petrol engine. Keep an eye on ebay to get an idea and don't be in too much of a rush to sell - unless need drives you?
Edit: Sorry, you are buying, not selling - must get my eyes tested again.

If its a good engine pay what the seller asks. These are going up as so many got scrapped and for a low annual mileage vehicle they are much nicer than a diesel. Could easily be worth £1k.

For £1200, I would want a decent 3.5l v8. Is the one you're looking at a 5 bearing and has the head been converted to run on lead free petrol, these are the most valuable. £500 sounds ok if it has good compression. Expect to pay another £100 or so to replace seals and hoses etc before you stick it in.
