Hi All,
I have a Series 3 with a chassis that needs work - Ive bought 2 No front dumb irons & a rear panel.
I'm contemplating sorting out the chassis then having it galvanised, I will be able to remove as much of the old coatings from the outside but will have no access to the inside cavities.
From experience Galv does not stick to paint, so what kind of results has anyone had both internally & externally after having it dipped - there's no way on gods earth I can afford a new Galvans chassis.
Also what's the cost of the process?

Looking forward to hearing everyones experience regarding this

So the chassis has to be clean. So cost for an oven to burn the paint off. If it’s not clean they won’t dip. This means no flaky rust.
Any repairs need to be done, you can’t see the thickness of the chassis on the inside.
You never know how much the galv cost is due to it been priced by weight(weigh in,dip, weigh out how much galv applied is the cost)
All this and you have to run the chassis round/collect it etc
Honestly I would go for new galv chassis all the time at least you know it’s new & no more welding for a few years when looked after.
Yep my chassis is still good 20years on

You would need to get it dipped at several places rather than just the galv. I would want an acid dip on the chassis to remove all rust and show up the little holes you did not even know were there. Then it will need repairing.

The galv place I have used charged on weight of steel rather than weight of galv, so you could work out the price based on the weight of the chassis. From my experience (I have galved nearly everything steel bolted to mine) it is not the cost of galvansiing that is the problem that is relatively cheap, it is the sand blasting, stripping, acid dipping, before hand to prep back to pure bare metal which costs all of the money.

I repaired mine, then had it blasted.
To remove internal paint I sprayed solvent based paint stripper inside, then burned it out.

After galvanising I applied cavity wax to the interior, and buzz weld galv in one to the interior.

1971 lightweight chassis, with all new riggers, rear 1/4 chassis, and new#1 crossmember, repaired belhousing and seatbelt crossmember.
Cardiff galv, £300.
