bought my 2001 disco with a knackered front prop uj
I have now renewed all the ujs on the front prop what i noticed when refitting is that i can turn the transfer box end by hand all the way round
this does not seem normal to me as i would have thought there should have been some resistance at least
refitted prop and loud banging noise still there
any advice folks

For banging noises from the transfer box you have to rebuild it cos the copper thrust washers on the diff are most probably gone, when i opened mine at around 150K miles they were as inexistent, only some very thin traces of them... thats's what you need: https://www.ashcroft-transmissions....30-rebuild-kits/lt230-master-rebuild-kit.html
Thats exactly the answer i was hoping not to get .
was hoping more for " you have a stone jammed in your uj "or something similar
have you ever carried out the overhaul and do you require special tools ?

worth actually checking what the issue is first, worn thrust washers wont give you loud banging noises, jack a front and a rear wheel up and holding both props counter rotate very carefully to check play in the center diff before play in the gear is added, check output bearing and front diff flange for play ie wear in the bearings

Can you drive these with the front prop off ?

if you have a diff lock spigot poking out of topof front output housing you turn it anti clockwise

This doesn't clonk it is almost the same as before I replaced the ujs rattle like the UK is knackered .
Will take it off again tomorrow hoping I have a stone trapped between the uj and flange. The Joy's of a gravel drive
does it clunk on gear change or a rotary knock

Jacked up today . Is this correct ?
One wheel up all others on terra ferma
I can rotate wheel easily
Parking brake on
Transfer box in.low range
No excess play in hub spines

But can move wheel approx 30 degrees before prop moves
Knocking noise from transfer box if hub rotated

front wheel presumably ,yes its normal ,chances re center diff is worn hence the play

Wheel turns quite a lot before prop moves when I turn the prop and listen to the transfer box it's not quiet .
Is the transfer box from a d1 the same as a d2 ?
theres allways some play ,before the prop must be cv or front diff, depends on the noise at the t box as spinning the diff gears can make a little noise as that is whats happening with only one wheel up
