Hello all, I wonder if someone can help

I pulled away today in D and it was as if it had gone into some kind of limo mode, no revs and just moved at a snails pace . Tried going through all the gears , no different then all of a sudden back into life. It wasn’t showing any warning lights at all at the time. This is the second time it’s happened, any thoughts .

I was wondering if I should check the gear box oil level?

any help will be much appreciated as ever

many thanks
Tom

First thing I would do is take out the MAP/IAP sensor and give it damn good clean with the correct sensor cleaner.
If that doesn't cure it then you may well have an ATF leak, which will reduce the level causing your problem. Make sure what you are doing if you don't know your way around the TD5 auto box, for instance you do not check the level simply by climbing under and removing the filler/level plug!:eek::eek::eek:

I'd still ensure both MAf and Map are clean.
You could also take the red plug off the ECU and clean out any oil you find there.
But I would like to be clear that it actually is a problem with the engine not revving up as you mention you "went through the gears".
For instance, does the engine not rev up even in neutral?
Seems funny to me that there are no warning lights, not even the M & S lights flashing? But then I am an amateur compared to SF!

And I also had a problem with the turbo wastegate actuator which only showed up when you tried to drive it hard or uphill, and then reset itself on stop and restart. That was a mechanical issue and easily sorted out.
But I don't think your symptoms match this either.

Many thanks for your replies,
Ive just been out in it and it seemed fine until I stoped for five minutes went to reverse and hardly moved again.
Ive just noticed that when it Did go again, when in reverse and you rev it a lot more smoke puffs out for a second as opposed to Driving forward.
It does rev in neutral I just waited for a minute with the engine running and it come back to life .
Would this happen if the gearbox oil was low ? Ive also noticed that standing still in drive there is a slight vibration but if you knock it into neutral it calms down , could this also be a symptom of low gearbox oil?
Ill try the ecu and the other sensors tomorrow.
What’s the correct way to check the oil level bye the way ?
Again many thanks for your help
Cheers
Tom ( starting to wish I’d bought another manual one now).

MAF sensor. If its a15p it will display a lag when the MAF is reading 0, on going into D. You notice it more when coming out of R. Check what your MAF is reading and replace it if knackered

had a go today,
cleaned the map sensor

Saw a video on YouTube of a guy in Belgium checking the maf sensor so did the same and got a reading of 0.05 volts on the wire back to the ecu , so I’m assuming I need a new maf sensor, also disconnected the plug and took it for a run and it actually seemed to perform better.

took out the ecu to check for oil and there was none ,

many thanks

Sounds like mat sensor if it pulls better unplugged, I had the same issue once but never reoccurred since. The viberation in drive when still is probably the box/ torque converter trying to push the car forward, this stops when in neutral. Mine does the same. Definitely change gearbox oil and filter, very easy to do, ideally two people, one under filling, other in car cycling gears, or if like me on your own I used a 5l garden sprayer with neck tube removed to keep pumping fluid when doing gears. Good strong boxes, old and not the most refined eg only 4 speed so but revvy but looked after there solid.

Many thanks for that reply,
I swapped the maf sensor from another td5 , cleaned the map sensor that was a bit gummed up and also cleaned the sensor in the air filter housing and now she runs lovely the difference is night and day.

I will definitely get the gearbox oil and filter changed as you say and See if that makes it a bit smother,

many thanks again

When you change fluid you can’t get it all out so what I did was just oil change, run it for couple of hundred miles then drop oil and filter and you’ll then have enough new fluid in.

IMO even better is to change the oil, take it to a 15 minutes drive as to make the box change through all gears more times then change it again with new filter, job done

Yea true, think I left mine a bit due to time but main thing is 2 oil changes near enough one after other, take a look in the magnet in the sump too, and old fluid colour as it tells a lot about if your gearbox is all ok.
