Before you fit the new one put a wire into the smallest spade of the plug and connect to earth and turn ignition on charge light should come on, this will prove it is working before you fit the new one.
The alternator needs the supply from the bulb to magnetise the its internal iron core on start up once alternator is running it supplies its self and lamp goes out as the voltage each side of the lamp is the same.

Bit of both but mostly underneath. The only bit above was due to the bolt nearest the cab being as long as it was that it went past a bracket meaning you physically couldn't. Then went in from the top.
I was afraid you'd say that. I don't much like getting under mine, for one thing there is a sludgy oil patch under the engine where it keeps pissing itself, also, I'm nowhere near as fit as I once was and if I crawl under it I'll need two assistance to get me back out. It it was an old mini, I'd just tip the bugger on its side.

Ahh crap. I noticed the original dynamo bracket was more accessible if yours still has that? It was a tight fit for me under there, i had to bend my arms around like they were pre-broken.

Did you fit a brand new unit or a reconditioned one?

If you fit a recon unit you can usually get a partial refund for the old one from the supplier.
