I posted a rather long winded thread in the Series section not knowing there was a Discovery section. So as not to repeat (which I presume is against the rules) I will take a different tact. I'm looking at a listing for a Disco II. Lots of equipment! Price is good! But I'm not even a shade tree mechanic. I've been looking and reading up on various 4x4's, Land Cruisers and Patrols mostly, but it seems the Discoverys draw more scrutiny than most. The use of a nanocom comes up a lot. So is a used 20 y.o. Disco II with 200,000 + kms an unwise choice for a novice?

General rule with most things in lif is, if its cheap it is cheap for a reason.

As for the D2, like most land rovers it is all about condition, and especially the chassis and the chassis.

I certainly agree about you get what you pay for and condition trumps price every time. I just have no experience with the pricing structure of the Disco.

D2's are generally good vehicles. But like most complex vehicles, things can and will need TLC.

However, I'd personally say look at p38 Range Rover's. The D2 only does two things better than the p38; 7 seater as it wasn't an option on the RR. And ACE. The p38 is better on every other count IMO.

D2 is better looking, has a difflock option, has a Td5 option (sounds better than the BMW 6) and has 50% more reliable suspension setup. I think the D2 has better traction control also? P38 only on rear or something?
But nothing wrong with a P38.

Looks are subjective. But I prefer the RR.

D2 uses the Lt230 transfer case. Some years they had no lockable centre diff. Major downer for off road use. As it leaves the centre diff open. Not an issue on any p38, as they use a completely different transfer case which is essentially a limited slip centre diff. Td5 is ok, although the BMW engine can make the same sort of power. You also get the 4.6 RV8 in the Range Rover, something you didn't get in UK spec D2's. 1999 Model Year onwards p38's have 4 wheel traction control. Earlier models only have it on the rear axle.

Whoever owned that vehicle certainly had an eye for detail and seems to have been a keen outdoor enthusiast, unless all the gear is for show. But you have to ask yourself if you need all those add-ons as you're paying for them somehow. It's heavily modified, engine included I suspect with the ECU remapped, etc. so you're going to need expertise that's not covered in the RAVE workshop manual. No need to repeat what you have to watch out for when buying a D2 (there are reams of info about that in this forum already) but if you're not prepared to learn quickly, invest in the tools required and dedicate time to repair and maintain, I'd give it a miss, especially at that price.

Unless you want to buy a nanocom (other units available) and be a wizard on the spanners, stay clear of any LR.

Me......Ive got a comprehensive tool kit, and time to do repairs...
