I've just recently got my series 2a 109 it is fitted with a perkins 3.3 diesel engine and appears
Really great but is it slow or what 50-55 mph ish might do more down hill but is it possible to make it faster I was told I could change the diffs with a better ratio has anyone done this if so any pointers to help me possibly do this, I'm assuming it has standard axles fitted it doesn't look as if they have been changed
Thanks Andy

Sounds to me like your truck is doing ok for a Perkins engine landy. Changing diffs may help a bit with speed on the flat but it will see a hill coming before you even get there.

It sounds like the engine was originally from an old fork lift or plant equipment so the FIP will be set for commercial use and needs setting for road use then there should be no reason it shouldn't do less the 80 mph, hope this helps, and that's with std gearing and diffs :D

With standard gearing, at maximum revs on a Perkins 4/203, you will get 45 mph. Ignore Series speedometer, that is what you get.
The most reliable route to more speed, without breaking halfshafts or destroying overdrives, is to fit a high ratio transfer box.
That engine probably has a hydraulic governor, but the mechanically governed engines do not rev any more.

That doesn't add up. Just looked at a gearing calculator and 4.7:1 diffs and standard 29" tall tyres (205's) would give you 79.8mph @ 5000rpm. No way an old diesel like that will be running 5000rpm in top or more!

2800 rpm no load governed speed, to be exact. Individual engines might vary 100rpm either way, or rev a bit more downhill.

If you charge about at 80 in a series you want beating. Apart from not being able to stop you’ll destroy anything or anyone you hit.
Down right irresponsible. Get a bleedin track car.
Not saying i do or did but would be capable or doing 80 it was my dad with his 1964 2a with a perkins 4203 fitted back in the 80's where we just tried it and it went to 80, my 2a fitted with a tweaked 200 tdi will do 95 but i don't cruise at that speed i just did it to try it.

With all honesty, I would love to see the gearing and tyre size behind this.
At 90 Mph my 90 300tdi is screaming and I reckon would need a long runup to hit 95, but that is using 2x gps devices to confirm speed . Obv this was a private runway.

Cheers

Ok 97 to be egzact, tweaked 200tdi, 300tdi turbo, ashcroft HRTC, 3.54 diffs, 235 tyres and a GPS speedo.
