Defender td5

Hi. Suggestions please. Td5 , turns over but wont start. Fuel in tank and fuel pump running. Just bought a hawkeye, what do i look for? Any help appreciated

Was it running ok before?

Yeah it was fine. Changed main relay. No change.

Check the RPM showing when being cranked and the Voltage when being cranked.

0 rpm when cranked, I would suspect your crank sensor is fubarred. Nice easy thing to change.

Hmmm. So Firstly thanks for the help , second , I’ve just changed it from my other truck ( checked it worked first) still won’t record any rpm when cranked. I’m wondering if the immobiliser could be causing it?

Sometimes they dont fire the injectors if voltage drops during cranking. So battery is first thing to check. Charge it and check voltage following morning. What size is the battery?

Thanks for the reply. I’ve charged it. 12.75v. Not sure of capacity. Still can’t see any rpm on the ecu on cranking. I’m suspecting ecu

Did you check the crank sensor wiring for continuity?
sensor may be fine but signal not getting there.

Thanks chaps for the info and advice. After doing all the things suggested, and learned a lot along the way! Problem solved! It’s the ecu! The ecu had been away to ecu testing and came back as no faults found. Put the ecu in from my other truck- coded it up , and it started on the button. Sweet as. The ecu couldn’t see the engine rpm! Even if the ecu isn’t coded to that engine, you can still see engine rpm on cranking with the Hawkeye btw.
