Out and about in my 2a

Metal Detecting at Scarborough ( North Beach ) today

It does look very neat.
I notice you have the chequerplate on the front wings. What's people's opinion on that? I've bought a pair, but I'm in two minds as to whether to actually fit it or not. I can see it could be useful to allow standing on the wings, etc, but I'm not sure it's very aesthetically pleasing. Maybe I'll just get used to it.

Comes in handy when working on vehicle and putting tools on saves scratching the paintwork as we as standing on but they are great for covering wing mirror and or arial holes up like mine are doing

+1 my model has factory fitted chequer plate, and it means you can put tools on the wings without having OCD palpitations

Lovely looking LR btw. I'd find a wire grille though - I never really though much of the S3 plastic one

Yes, and every one was obviously designed for a 109.
That is a sweet looking LR though. The wheels look better in Limestone.

Might you tell us about your metal detectors Graham? I've only ever used cheapo ones and was looking at a better class of detector but gave up when I couldn't decide due to all the contradictory reviews.
I did come up with a good strategy for finding loose change on the beach: i concentrate on the area where dunes meet flat beach, it creates a natural seat with a back-rest of sorts; it's where people sit and their money sometimes falls out of their pockets and into the sand. First time I tried it I found 60p in those daft 20p coins in a couple of minutes.

No I only found one bottle top, my mate who was with me with his identical detector to mine found a nugget ( £1 ) coin and 3x 2p's but he was further up the beach to me but after a couple of hours the tide came in so as i didn't know anywhere else around there we decided to go to church bay in Angelsey as the tide wasn't suppose to be in for a couple of hours but on arrival it was already in so we called it a day and came home

Ok I have 2 detectors now the first one is a C scope 4PI ( pulse induction ) supposedly designed to work on beaches but have hered other's use them on land with good results but I only do beach owned it for the past 2 years but only used it a few times due to doing my 2a rebuild to use to get to the beaches so only found a few things with it really then it started playing up over the past few times out but think I've sorted it now and plan to test it out on the next outing.
My other detector is a Tianxun TX850 which I have just bought and took it out for the first time on Saturday but didn't find much due to what you have already read, this machine unlike my first one which was basically switch on and go this one has loads of setting on it which I've yet to learn and can be used on both land and beach, both machines have waterproof coils so the coils can go under water upto the switch panel box, hope this helps

Come across this post and noted you mentioned series 2a cabs are rare nowadays.

I've come into possession of one and I don't know what to do with it. ( handed down in a will ).

What is its current worth and how much do you think it would cost to restore to a decent standard?

Any advice would be greatfully received.

What do you mean by “2a cabs are rare”? The whole vehicle or just the roof ?

The cost to repair is largely dependent on what condition it is now . The biggest expense would be replacing the chassis and or bulkhead if it were needed . Does it run ? Is it a diesel or petrol ? Is it all original (it looks pretty original from your photos)? Personally I wouldn’t repaint it , just clean it up as it is .

As for current prices , go and look on eBay and gumtree to see how much similar ones go for .

Many people regard Series 2a’s as being the best and most practical of all the Series vehicles , as the cost of keeping them on the road is not as great as other models . Yours looks like an eminently desirable machine if it is not messed around with too much .

Interior photos would help.

Fingers crossed the chassis and bulkhead don't need a complete change. Will know more on Saturday when I get to have a closer look.

Inside is just dirty full of fishing bits and pieces

So what do you want to do with it ? Are you into old Land Rovers , or have you just been lumbered with it and want to get rid of it ?

They are not rare but are quite desirable .

From what I can see the bulkheads looks quite good (obviously more photos would be required to give a proper opinion) and the chassis would have to be pretty bad to require replacing . You might get away with just repairing any rot .

If you have got the space to keep it under cover I wouldn’t be in any great hurry to make any decisions as to it’s future . It looks like a vehicle you could have some fun in . Once you have cleaned the poo stains off the seats !

Its been left to us in a will so its sentimental more than anything.

My partner has the idea of using it as her wedding car in 2022.

I'll have some more pictures come Saturday.

I would like to make it more road worthy but at the same time keep its originality and I like the idea of keeping the paint work as it is.

No reason why it can’t be made roadworthy , it will just take a bit of money . If you can do some or all of the work yourselves then you can save quite a bit .

Having a fiancée who is willing to go in it in a wedding dress is a definite plus . Most wouldn’t be seen dead in one . Just make sure you have a back up car on the big day . Just in case !
