I've had landrover tell me on different occasions that the ES Premium and the HSE is the top spec for the freeby 1. Both were adamant it was the particular model they were talking about that was the best, so my question is, which is it really?

Both are top spec, but from different year's of FL1 production.
The ES Premium was the top spec, post MY2003 but Pre-Facelift.
The HSE came along after the Facelift model came out, as all the model designators changed after the Facelift went on sale.

Hope this helps.

That clears up my confusion. Thanks Nodge :)

Here's a full list of models by year.

Up to MY2000, lowest to highest.
I (petrol) or Di (diesel)
Xi (petrol) or Di (diesel)
XEi (petrol) or DXi (diesel).
There were a few different models thrown in for various events, like the 50th anniversary FL1 (1998), which were generally based on higher specs, often with options added.

After the MY2001 redesign, the models changed designation, and later on in the production run, some special models came out with names of way points on the Camel Trophy Run I think.
The i and Di became the "S", also Maasai.
The Xi and Di became "GS" also Serengeti.
The XEi and DXi became the ES and Kalahari.
After MY2003, the ES Premium came out, with a better audio system from Harmon Kardon.

After the Facelift came out, the model designation changed again following the same theme as before, and being similarly equipped too.
"E" Being the basic model, only available in 1.8K and TD4 manual. Equivalent to previous i and S models (just to confuse).
"S" Again only available in 1.8K TD4 manual, equivalent to GS models.
"SE" was equivalent to the ES, but without the sunroof.
HSE was the equivalent of the ES Premium.

The Sport came out after Facelift.
Sport, similar to the SE.
Sport Premium, similar to the HSE.
I think I'm reasonably accurate, as this was from memory.
Hope this helps.

Glad you qualified things, however, the real top of the range is the XEDi.

May not have windows all round that wind on a button, or leather seats, or heated front screens, or sound systems with German names... but they're just frivolous luxury :D

At the time, such luxury things like leather were optional, I believe.
Yeh, roof rails were not standard even on the 'posh' model.

However, the 50th Anniversary model was produced on the very early K/L cars and had lots of goodies bolted on. Not sure exactly which were standard on the 50th, but the ones I've seen had leather, rails, the hard cargo cover for the rear, the twin rear seats with the cubby box between and probably a few extra bits and pieces.
The name may be German sounding, but Harmon Kardon American audio manufacturer, responsible for many brands including JBL!!. ;)
lol, brand marketing at its most globally corporate :D

My 50th Anniversary 1.8K Wagon had everything. Heated leather seat with matching steering wheel, sunroof, electric windows all round, boot roller cover, power sockets in the front, rear and boot area, roof rails and those horrible side steps, and that amazing paint which was a flips between green and blue, depending on the angle you view the panel at.
I loved my 50th, but sadly a new VW Tiquan forced me to sell it.:(
