hey all,

I'm new to owning a landrover and to this forum:)

I've just had my aircon regassed at kwik fit yesterday, now since regas its super cool which is great however since the regas I get a fairly loud noise.

The noise is like a fan spinning and almost like its grinding / vibrating on something. I've called kwik fit who said that all they done was put gas in so cant see it being something they'd done.

If you turn aircon off the noise stops... when aircon is on, the noise would get louder and go with the engine (although louder than the engine) when you accelerate and decelerate although it cant be heard on the outside.

Not sure if anyone has any experience of this at all? Or if anything can be suggested?

Spoke to landy dealer and they just said not to use the aircon and take it to them...

Sounds like you may have a bad compressor or aircon clutch. Before the system was regassed, it wouldn't have activated when you tried the aircon switch due to lack of refrigerant gas pressure, but now it does and you can hear the problem. You don't know how long the system has been dormant, and it could possibly have been damaged by ingress of moist air, or by loss of its lubricating oil.

scotty kilmore had an aircon video recently - he drains them out and refiles with fresh - not recycled gas, worth finding out what kwik fit do with drained gas, bin it or re use it, possibility you got someones contaminated gas?. He ads a lub to older systems, you could get that done to see if it cures it
also there is another common issue with these - the bearings go in the alternator which load up when the aircon is on - to me it sounds like a hollow growl vibrating noise on acceleration, wonder could it be that now that the aircon is working harder.

It does sound like a low grumbling /rattling noise that can be heard over the engine... its loudest between 5mph to about 40mph then it starts to die down a little...

sounds like the alternator bearings, do a search on here - post i have made, and pretty sure noise is in the title see if its the same. i have changed tensioner and belt which helped and the noise has now gone - for now lol

Thanks for that I'll have a search after work, appreciate it

Hey, just wondering if you ever got to the bottom of this? My Freelander has just started making this exact sound!
Thanks
Nick

My P38 was working fine until about 4 weeks ago. Checked the static pressure with my gauges and it was just slightly too low for the system to kick in, but not empty.

Got kwik **** Windsor to fill it, but afterwards got a "tinkling" noise from compressor, which definitely wasn't there before, and stops when I disable the AC. When I asked how much oil they used, they didn't know, but simply showed me the specs. I have a suspicion they did the gas but not the oil or not enough. Trouble is I cannot prove it.

My son & his boss just got a new machine at Euros in Bedford, so will get them to do it properly, before I replace the compressor.

Lesson = don't use these cowboys that rely on the machine & know nothing !!
