if the chassis has been replaced with a new Galv chassis their will be no number such as my series 1 which was acquired through the series one club who at the time owned the original jig
and the chassis were made by Richard Chassis ,and who in their right mind would damage the Galv covering to remark the chassis number .Proof of the replacement would be via e-mails and the order
placed through the Series One Club

Since I've looked at a few 90 and 110's to purchase, I've seen some dodgy VIN stamped frames. Looked like they used a dull flat tip screwdriver and a rock.

I blame my reading glasses. Point is there's a lot of ringers and the recent changes to make historics MOT exempt mean that its easier to pass them off as the VINs are not getting checked. There are key signs that are hard to conceal. Photos will usually be enough to know.

Why not use carfax? It's part of the official carfax that you get for free. Itll give you recalls, registration info and service history. Basically everything but accident data. If you want a detail info, be sure to check out this site. I tried this for my current car, and it worked well

Hope this helps.
Land Rover chassis numbers

Older Land Rovers may have a chequered past. They could have been rebuilt several times and ended up with quite a different configuration to the one they started with. Not a problem in itself, but it can be interesting to discover how your vehicle began its life. More seriously, stolen Landies are sometimes given a new identity using the chassis plate from a scrapped vehicle. So if the chassis number doesn't correspond to the vehicle you are looking at, alarm bells should start to ring.

The chassis number is usually found stamped on an aluminium plate which also gives a basic description of the vehicle. This will usually be mounted on the bulkhead - inside the cab on earlier vehicles, under the bonnet (sometimes attached to the bulkhead, sometimes to the brake servo) on later ones. The list below does not include Series One vehicles - these are very much a collector's item nowadays, and I would recommend joining the Land Rover Series One Club if you are serious about purchasing one of these historic machines.

From the end of 1979 Land Rover went over to the modern 17 digit VIN numbers - these are slightly harder to decode, but still no problem with the list below. Prior to this, 9 digit numbers, or 8 digits plus a suffix letter, were used.

There are a few gaps in the above information, particularly Army vehicles and 127/130 variants. Any information to plug the gaps will be gratefully received.

But does it work with prehistoric wrecks such as Landys?
And does it work on vehicles in GB?
And can you pay in GB groats?
I just inputted my Disco 2 VIN and it's demanding Ostralian schekles!
Just inputted my Series 2 VIN and the computer says "8 symbols left to full VIN!" :(
