Hello everyone, it’s been a while since I have posted on here for anything like this

It was a normal day today, going to work, my 2005 defender td5 has never skipped a beat in the 4 years I have owned her, anyway when I went to start her up to go home she just spun over and didn’t fire at all, so I called my mechanic as was miles from home and he said listen for the pump etc which I heard, anyway i jumped back in and she started right up, and has been fine all day, very very weird and worrying for me as it’s my works truck... Any ideas what this could be guys?

Just taken out the crank sensor and cleaned all the plugs and everything off, it was all very mucky

How much juice did u have in the tank? Could be your return valve in the filter housing beginning to leak. Usually shown on low fuel after standing overnight.

Hello Northam bobber! The tank was/is completely full, I has only started her half hour before this happened and all was normal then

It could be your fuel pump relay is faulty or has loose or dirty connection. When you were cranking was you temp gauge in the red? Did the glow plug light come on? I had this and like you it would run fine then every so often would crank and not start. then it would start and continue to do so for weeks then it would do it sgain. Took me ages to track it fown. The fuel pump relay is yellow under the drivers seat near the ecu. Also check the earth in there too.

Wireman thank you so much for you’re input! I will check the pump relay is it easy to find amongst all the other ones? I didn’t check if the temp was up as was in panic mode, but if/when it happens again I will be sure to check for that has yours been completely cured now?

Under the drivers seat are the ecus, next to them are two yellow relays, I can't remember which is which but clean/check them both.
Yes mine is cured (touch wood) the connections were loose

Sounds like the pinion in the starter motor didn’t engage, probably getting ready for a new starter motor
The engine was actually turning though, whilst taking the crank sensor out everything in that area was covered with old oil and diesel from where my reg was leaking back ago

Could be the battery, if voltage drops too low during cranking then in jectors don't fire

I have just purchased a genuine fuel pump relay from rimmer bros, today when I put the ignition on whilst at work I couldn’t hear the pump going, but still started ok, then after driving to where I needed to go I could hear it again, so maybe the fuel pump is looking at deaths door? Or it’s just the relay or something more sinister
