How to know of clutch and flywheel need replacing?

It appears the gearbox needs replacing on our td5. The clutch and flywheel where changed about 2 years ago and the garage want to change them again. A clutch and flywheel should be good for more than 20k. However, I can't get them to give me an opinion and they want to send me pictures to make the decision? I'm a bit surprised that a good garage can't give an opinion. Not sure how I guess the condition from a picture (

Did they use a good quality clutch kit like Valeo when it was changed ? If not, 2yrs / 20k sounds reasonable to me.
Ask them to send you the pics and upload them here. I'm sure someone can do a visual assessment and will let you know.

put pics up ,id be surprised if flywheel needed replacing,clutch cover ma show signs of wear on he fingers,they all do obviously getting worse over time but rarely actually fail before clutch plate

I would imagine they are reluctant to say it is/was okay, as you could come back and say, ever since you!

So would I. I can't see why anyone wouldn't change the wearable items, while the box is off.

Changed the clutch and flywheel on my defender at a out 110k miles and they looked like they could have gone on a bit more, i read somewhere there is a maximum free rotation in the flywheel before its considered shot. You can put a mark on the outer and the inner then measure how far you can rotate it by hand (measuring between the Mark's) the amount of free rotation increases as the springs get softer.

Nowadays there is not much wear dofference between new and worn friction plates, rare to see them anywhere near the rivets, like days of old.
