Good day all,

Hello from Malta!

Let's go back a few years... I happily ran a company car Freelander 2 for just over 3 years until 2012. I then tried my luck with a few other land rovers on a lower budget.

I bought a 110 300 tdi but found it too long for city parking so it made way for a 2-door RRC V8 with a 2" lift for offroad fun and a Freelander 1 td4 for daily running. The RRC had to go pretty quickly as I couldn't afford it and the FL had a series of unreliability issues that made me sell it within 2 years. I then got a Disco 1 300tdi and then learned about the rust gremlins. It was rotten with a capital F and I lost a fair wad on selling it. At that point I gave up on LR and got a sensible BMW saloon. However i came across a Series III for sale and fell for it. This also turned out to be rustier than I thought. I used it briefly until it had to go to finance family & home expenses, though again I lost €€ on it.

Which brings us up to date. I just got rid of the BMW and was looking for a used Evoque. Modern, practical, relatively reliable and approved by the Mrs. I then realised I really do not feel like another loan / finance commitments for a few years, when lo and behold 2 RRC showed up for sale, both 300tdi auto. With my history the first thing I looked for was rust and I promised myself that I'd walk away from anything remotely rusty.

The first I saw is a '94 soft dash Vogue with sunroof, grey leather etc, engine is knackered at almost 300k miles. Top tailgate is shot and doors have rust at bottom. It has been home sprayed a dull grey except the bonnet which has patina almost to bare metal. Boot floor has surface rust but not terrible, Chassis appears OK. The engine basically needs a rebuild before I can use it so it's a no-go.

The second is a 1988 hard dash with 2-tone beige "bracken" velour interior, engine is much better than the other but body is worse - the bonnet has two holes the size of saucers where the windscreen washers used to be sited. The doors have patches of rust just under the door catch, otherwise OK and driver footwell/pillar base are... let's say aircooled. The rest of the body frame itself, roof, chassis, boot floor etc are relatively great. It's in its original Savannah beige.

Given my promise to myself I should have walked away from both.

There is therefore no explanation as to why I will next week be the owner of the 2nd one, hard dash in beige.

Wish me luck and follow the project thread once I set it up :)

Thanks,
Steve
