Surging under throttle

2006 range rover sport diesel

When started the car fires up great and idle just fine. However when pressing the accelerator to rev the engine it lags/bounces through it and even when holding it at a set rpm. When allowed back to idle it idles great. When driving it does not accelerate like normal except for surging and light jerking constantly with it the entire time at all speeds. No surging idle though. Smooth when just sitting

Happens often but there is a randomness to it. Starting it a few times in different ways sometimes gets it running just fine (Like one way is I press the pedal some when starting to for a high rev right at start.

I have looked for any kind of similar surging while throttling but hadn't come up with anything.

Any help would be appreciated!

Nightmare that one..
Any engine codes or engine lights even briefly flashing?
Any split hoses or dodgy broken plugs?
Jammed egr valve/s,
Sticking butterfly valve/s?

I'm not one of the clever like some on here but having had surging and lag issues recently, it turned out to be a melted, collapsed egr hose.
Do you have any exhaust smell in cab?
Second thought is crankcase breather
Good luck with whatever it is.

Hi

plus 1 what’s already been mentioned, is it an auto plse

May I add plse , when was the fuel filter last changed and indeed getting it onto diagnostics inc live data will help

also check that ur MAP sensor is clean , sits in top of ur throttle body

ref ur egrs , don’t know if u have a DPF fitted , as if u do alas can’t blank them

There’s a few diagnostics around , Autel AP200 , think that’s around £50 or the better gap iid, alas that around £500 now

just a thought , is there any surging around 2,000 revs and does ur rev counter fluctuate

hope that helps

Rovacom-IQ is worth a look for diagnostics if it covers that year.
