Disco 2 Urgent votes needed - D2 tyre choice between...

Urgently need to order tyres before sh1t stops being delivered! My tyres have had it, and I need all four. I am stuck between tyres recommended to me (no personal experience):

1. BFG AT - https://www.blackcircles.com/catalo...rrain-ta-ko2/255/55/R18/R/109/m?tyre=34716872 - I was concerned by the picture before realising it's a stock image. Plus these are AT2, is that different, at least different enough to make them more off road focussed than the older version?

2: Toyo Open Country AT - I heard good things about these.

I checked online for some reviews (always with a pinch of salt) but this chart (https://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyres_For/Land-Rover/Discovery-2.htm) doesn't seem to rate the BFG ATs very much. Toyo's seem to come out way stronger.

I will be on road 90% of time, but would like some ability to go off road, not up mountains, but off road like flat fields and maybe some country tracks etc. Grateful for any recommendations

Damn I wish I could collect! Penzance to Blackpool....hmmmm! Shame, beautiful.
Although I was told those tyres are noisy and not as good on road as more of a road tyre. I really don't need to go off road much at all, but I certainly might do more with those on!
 
I have the toyo open country on our D3 they are great very little road noise. I also have the gg at3 on my L322 no road noise at all but not such aggressive tread pattern
 
Very different kinds of tyres tbh.

The BFG's are very good. But intended to be used off road, so are more compromised as a road only tyre. They are also designed for USA terrain, which is quite different to ours. Personally I just wouldn't be picking between these two tyres, they are almost at either end of the All Terrain spectrum. That said, both are good, so if it must be one of these, just pick one.
 
Goodyear ATs are fine although not cheap, as our tyre bloke said"They don't wear out" bit of an exaggeration but they do last well and we drive mostly on the road. Also General Grabbers ATs are fine and a bit cheaper. never really found road noise to be a problem, it's a Landy ffs!

Thanks for the comments. I can choose from more than just those two, I just grabbed those as two people I know mentioned them and had good views of them.

I know it's a Landy, but road noise can be an issue if it's VERY noticeable. It may be a landy but if I am sat on motorways for 8 hours which I am sometimes, that can make for a much less comfortable journey so I have to consider that. However, it's less about the noise and more about the road handling, wet grip, etc. I just want something which drives as much like a road tyre as possible, but perhaps with a HINT of off road abilities. Open to suggestions but I will check out those Coopers now, thanks again

On my Disco 1 I did once change the ATs for a set of road tyres, I honestly couldn't tell the difference in noise and at the time I was driving back an forth to our place in France, 550 miles each way mostly on motorways. but then I suppose French motorways may be less noisy. Anyway they wore out a lot quicker!
 
When you say ATs, do you mean general grabber? I never know if people refer to a brand with AT, or just mean any brand of all terrain tyres?
 
AT just stands for All Terrain, if the tyre doesn't have that it could still be a road trye but made by the same manufacturer. Don't know if General Grabber do ordinary road tyres. Doubt it somehow, I'll just check.

Well i was wrong, they do shedloads of tyres that are not ATs!
Anyway, although this thread is abit old, someone asked more or less the same question so you maybe interested in the answers.https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=74&t=1632639 Spect the manufacturers will still make 'em, or similar.
You seem to be looking for a 70/30 or even a 90/10 road/offroad split.

I would say 80/20 on/off road. Thanks for your input and yep I will have a read of that thread.

If I can't decide I have to buy urgently so I will just go for GFB AT KO2 as most people seem to think they are good, and I wouldn't mind sacrificing a BIT of road comfort for a good bit of strength and durability if I do start going off road more, which I might, although not mountaineering, just shooting/fishing type stuff which I am sure road tyres could probably do, until I get stuck :D
 
The KO2 is a fine tyre and it looks better on than any other AT. Maxxis wormdrive looks nice also, but does not have the reputation of the BFG.
If i could afford them i would but BFG KO2s every time. We do 1000s of miles a year on and off road with them on my work trucks, and they are flawless to be honest. Gen Grabber AT3 is also a great tyre, but looks too weedy for me : )

Question - I am half considering JohnLad's https://www.blackcircles.com/catalo...rrain-ta-ko2/255/55/R18/R/109/m?tyre=34716872. I can't see it being possible at this point, but just to rule it out.....

IF I could find a way to collect them, what are the considerations I should make regarding the change of wheel size? Mine are 255/55/18, silver Disco2 TD5. Those wheels are 17" and come from a Disco 3. I don't know what "spigots" are. What would I have to do to get these to fit mine, would they look odd in any way or handle differently due to the inch smaller wheel? I actually would liek to go down in profile a bit (up actually, in profile) as I have always hated harder lower profiles. Not sure it's even possible, but if it was, would these be a good bet for my D2?
 
I have same size and also pretty worn tyres.

Last set were Urban Terrain which are Dry OK, Wet poor, BOATs good, snow very good.

But previous NLA Avon Rangers were better.

So will look at this with interest.
