Swivel rebuild problems

I've just spent a frustrating evening reassembling a swivel. First I forgot to put the seal on before bolting the swivel to the axle, then got the seal plate the wrong way around so had to take it off a second time, then destroyed the swivel to axle gasket by misaligning the holes.

Finally I got it all fitted but there seems to be a problem. The swivel will only turn slightly - certainly not enough to impact the lock stop, and I can only turn the drive shaft when it's completely straight on. I assume I've done something daft but I can't think what it is at the moment. Any help would be appreciated!

It does pay to have a diagram to hand or phone pic of what you are taking apart if you are not used to these things.
Can you turn the swivel with out the shaft in ? If so it may be you are not locating the shaft fully in place.

Sounds like the cv joint isnt far enough out. There should be some shims and then a circlip - have you added those?

Ive done this myself.

Are the bearinga on the king pins aligned properly? Are they torqued up to the correct spec using the right amount of shims?

1994 - 2006 from LA930456

cv is through enough you need to pull it out into stub axle as you bolt stub axle up

They're not symmetrical - the bolt hole at the top is to one side, and although there was a 50:50 chance of it being right, my luck wasn't in.

I'll check the position of the CV joint. I'd tested out the right combination of shims before I fitted the bits to the axle, but I'd also fitted the stub axle in advance which might have been a mistake. I'll have to take it all off and try again.

Give it a go using a bolt in the hole at the end of the CV - if it is that, you should be able to pull it out (have the wheels straight forward).

Take it to bits again and follow the exploded diagram above.... The only thing you should be able to get wrong is the shims for the swivel preload.

I'm fairly sure it's together in the right order. I didn't dismantle the CV joint when I took it all apart. The complete shaft has just been sat to one side so there shouldn't be anything wrong with it. I'll have a look next time I'm self isolating in the garage.

it has to be seated fully into stub axle hand held like that whilst stub axle is bolted up, the shims on the end arent really vital as once fitted correct cv will stay in its favoured position
