As you can tell from my posts over the past few months, I'm slowly refurbing my Freelander. I'd like to reduce road noise from the tires, as I've only been buying the cheapest on offer at my local tire place.

What are the quietest tires you've found? The wife and I often just don't speak because noise in the cabin is too loud with the tires we have...

Pirelli Scorpion STR is pretty good.

Also, do the one wheel up time test if you haven't already. Noise on my wife's TD4 was awful when VCU time exceeded 1.5 minutes for 45 degrees at 5 Kg with 1.2m bar. It also scrubbed the back tyres out.
I have just fitted new Yokohama Geolander GO15 and they are quiet and fab in the wet. Look good too as they have the side tread pattern which rolls onto the sidewall!!

Theres something seriously wrong with your hippo then... I had Kumho KL71's on mine and yes there is tyre noise but you can have a conversation and KL71's aren't exactly, mild, tyres.

i've had pirelli scorp's .. michelin lattitude's ..
and now shod with conti. contacts ..

m.lattitude's were quieter than the pirelli's
[ also wore longer ]

current conti's about same noise as the michelin's

~~~~~~~~~~~~
pirelli and michelin seem to change their range every so often
i.e. introduce new models .. 'n ditch the prev. line ..
continental looks as if they keep certain models available long term
be one reason i decided on conti's this time round
the y.geolander's seem to be a continuer as well
and were my other potential choice this time around
conti's got the vote .. as i've had them prev. on a motorcycle
and they handled very well ..
and the one's for my hippo have not dissapointed
they feel better thru the steering .. subtle but noticable difference
( there's added meat to the tyre's shoulder ..
( with the m.lattitudes .. was told they had more ply than other makes
( where the tyre contacts the road surface
at one point was considering avon offerings ..
one looked excellent for wet surface braking
and looked ok re. the noise level value
Started with Rapid P609s, couldn't really talk either. Gone to Michelin Crossclimates, it's like the cabin suddenly became completely sealed off from the outside because there was so much less noise
By far the quietest tyres I have ever had on a 4x4 are these.
BFGoodrich G-Force Winter 2 SUV 215/65 R16 102 H XL
I did have a set of "proper" BFGoodrich tyres on but after too many years on the car the MOT here told me to get new ones as these were too old!! So went out looking for a set that were a lot quieter then the originals and more economical.
First time on the road OMG talk a bout hearing conversations and the thing clung to corners like no ones business.
Still had a fair amount of grip on slippy surface, admittedly not as good as before but then I'm getting on and so is the Landy.
I fitted Cooper Touring 235/55/18 to my Sport wheels. They're silent, well as silent as possible for a tyre of those dimensions.
