Green Laning in Devon

Hi all,just got a discovery 2 and want to meet up with like minded enthusiasts to show me some good green lanes in Devon area ,
Can anybody recommend some?
Or i could tag along some time

To be fair I dont think 80 quid is a bad deal. Someone else will have done the homework on where to go safely and legally.

I can vouch for them. I have done half a dozen or more tours with them. Safety first, follow the law, but still have a great time. Tom who leads it, and any assistants used are mechanics and they have all the gear that is feasible to carry to rescue people and fix road side fixable repairs.

Given the amount of work in planning and following a route and getting six, (max), vehicles round safely for a day I think it is pretty good value, especially if you are a bit of a newbie - which after about 6 or so tours, I am.

fair play, but that statement of 6 is a worry, as GLASS now suggest 4 as a normal limit and 5 at a push. DO they give you the chance to learn how to plan routes yourself? how to find out if routes are open , TRO's VRO'S?

It's not included in a typical day/weekend out - but there is plenty of time in the evening for chatting to Tom and the group and learning from that. Its a follow the leader style day out - drive what you bring - not a course.

I think there is more to be learnt , joining up with like minded individuals , a local club, GLASS etc and learning to plan routes, be part of the local community. Paying someone to lead you around would soon get boring.

I totally get your point, but its not an ‘either/or’ decision. I can do both, Planning a route and then driving it for the first time can be hazardous - very scratchy, rocky, deep, etc, potentially difficult/hostile land owners - or just plain dull.

With Tom he has driven every route first, knows how deep the mud holes are, knows where they are, avoids the boring lanes, drives straight to the interesting ones, then advises on which cars can do which feature, e.g Don’t drive through that without a snorkel, don’t drive through that at all, stick to the right through that hole, etc. I have seen local groups on Salisbury Plain get really stuck, lacking a good leader, lacking good rescue equipment or technical knowledge - and either rescued them, or occasionally tried but found them so stuck we have hard to leave them for the tanks to pull out.

I am sure that in Devon, based on my experiences down there that you can go equally as wrong without some one knowing their way around - so although I’d love to go out with a local club in Salisbury where I also know my way around - I’d be more worried about a trip through Wales/Devon without a good guide.

I've done loads of laning in Wales on my own, trailwise usually has comments next to the lanes.
1, Know your and your vehicles capability.
2, With this in mind always be prepared to get out and walk ahead or even reverse a considerable distance.
3, Learn to read an o/s map

I've had some great days out on my own and lead some great days anorl.
