Looking for advise to most likely cause for this problem.
The problem I have is I put it in any gear and nothing happens for quite a while then it will engage gears. While driving it seems ok changing gears although not always smooth.
Is it likely to be the xyz switch. The torque converter. Or gearbox itself.
Also the oil light is on does the converter get oil from engine or gearbox.
Many thanks in advance none of these options are cheap so don't want to do one to find out it's the other.

Do you get this after you have moved from P to D? Or when reversing then into N then pull off and it has no power for a few seconds then suddenly shoots off? If so its the xyz switch. Do your selector lights all show red when moving the stick? If one position doesnt it points to xyz. Mine does this when cold. Not expensive to take it off, open it up and try and clean it up. Reseal it and refit. It may need a new one. If it has a brown case it’s probably had it. 2nd hand units off ebay are the next option.

If your m+s lights are not flashing, I doubt it is the xyz switch as the default position adopted by transmission ecu when a fault occurs in the xyz switch or associated circuits is, flashing m+s lights and limp home mode which can only be cleared by turning ignition off.

Thanks for that. I did some digging on u tube and saw how to do the xyz switch. There was also a reference saying it maybe the ecu getting oil tracking down the harness into the red connector block and there for shorting out. I checked this yesterday and sure enough it was there. All cleaned out and back on now but no different. Some lights did go off on the dash though. My next step is to do the xyz and clean that up. I will update with result after it's done. Might be a week or so as I'm doing the head gasket too. Depends how quick I can get the head skimmed.

Update head etc all done and fine. I cleaned the xyz and it was no different. So I went out and got another one. Second hand but it was working fine on the car it came off. Just fitted that and STILL the bloody same. A pig to engage gears at first but then seems to go through gears ok while driving . Some times it will dis engage when i stop after a few miles down motorway. Prolonged driving in top gear.
What else should i be looking for? Torque converter, ECU, or complete gearbox. Non of which I want to do really because of the cost and xyz cost me £100 already

Get a diagnostic check before you waste any more money, but as Auto box faults usually give M&S lights it may be no faults are being logged.
Can you explain the symptoms again? Being reluctant to drive immediately after start could just be the torque converter filling with fluid (from the auto box), but I have never heard of a box disengaging itself when you stop. Is the Drive LED still illuminated when this happens? Does it still say D on the LCD panel?

Yes after driving down slip road off motorway and come to a stop D is still showing on gear console and on dash but it's not engaged. I have to shove hazards on and rev it a few times. Sometimes holding revs at around 1500 to 2000 before it will engage again. Sometimes the D and m&s lights are flashing but not always.

Unless you are low on fluid as suggested above (I thought it had been recently replaced with new filter?), it sounds as though you may have an intermittent clutch failure somewhere in the auto box. That the M&S lights have been on is good news as it means a diagnostic check should tell you what the problem is.
