Flood water

Apologies if in the wrong place but am new at posting on forums

Hello all.
I have been reading posts on here for a while but only registered this week.
I am hoping someone can give me some advice, along with a few insults about my stupidity, regarding flood water.
I have owned a 3 door TD4 Freelander Sport for a couple of years now without too many problems. Over the past couple of years I have at times driven through flood water ranging from 300 mm to around 500 mm with no problems.
Last Friday 14th Feb however drove through water on the same roads that was no deeper than before, around 400 mm with the following happening.
As I came out of the water the vehicle lost power and stopped.
I rolled to side of road but engine wouldn't start, had a clicking sound from starter motor.
Left the car for about 1/2 hour and walked to work short distance.
Returned to the vehicle and remove air intake pipe from inner drivers side wing to moulding on-top of engine. Engine then started without any undue noises, but plenty of white exhaust gas, (I think may possibly have been steam.) So drove short distance to work with no problem.
Left for about 8 hours then reconnected air intake and started OK ready to drive 12 miles home. On the way home seemed to loose power and not want to go faster than 30-40 mph.
After around 10 miles seemed to pick up power and get up to normal speed.
Have driven to work each day since but seems to have a flat spot below 2000 rpm

Any advice most welcome.

Check the air filter for dampness. If it is damp, then water has got to it, and it'll need replacing. Also driving through 400mm of water, will put the fuel pump under water, with the potential to damage it, draw in water, or upset the electrical connections.

The stock FL1 has a wading depth of 400mm. The FL1 Sport has lower suspension and a correspondingly shallower max wading depth. You’ve got water in your air intake.

Thanks for the replies, including johnlad. I have now changed the air filter which was filthy,dry,but looked as though it had some water stains.
Still seems a bit flat below 2000 rpm so next check is the MAF as suggested by jedi.
Then maybe a loss of vacuum to the turbo. If i can work out which pipes do what.

Just replace all the vacuum pipes. The stuff is cheap, and you'll only need a couple of meters.

Steam comes from water, which must have been in the engine bores. I don't know on these engines how that affects them as the water can't compress. maybe possible to knock timing out a bit??
