Leaking gearbox and transfer box

Hi, my defender 90 200tid was a full rebuild 90 when I bough it.... it has always had a leaking transfer box and gearbox.

The transfer box leak seems to be from the seal on the large rectangular plate... so I am going to order a replacement seal kit and just change the seal (fingers crossed that should solve it).

The gearbox is leaking from the bell housing.... not sure what's the issue here so any help would be great.

Next question (sorry)- can I drop out the transfer box and gearbox as one unit..?

Reading the manual it notes the use of a special bracket to hold the units... is this really needed.?

Why I am dropping out these units I am also replacing he clutch, why doing all this work is there anything else worthwhile doing.?

Good luck with the transfer box oil leak. I changed mine a couple of times but the leaks still come back. I found using a Araldite type of sealant worked better. I also had to put the Araldite around each of the bolts that hold the plate in. Its one of those jobs that have to be done fairly regularly.
I don't have a problem with gearbox leaks.

Are you sure it's gearbox oil leaking out of the bell housing? If it's coming out of the wading plug hole then it could be engine oil which would likely mean you need to replace your rear crankshaft oil seal.

Black filthy oil from the bell housing will be engine oil, if its clean (and perhaps with a hint of red) could be gearbox. Could always check levels to see if it has dropped. Both can be removed as a single unit but awkward to manoeuvre around if you are trying do it from inside the cab (vehicle on the ground) in which case splitting the boxes is easier but a bit more time consuming. Not done it when on a ramp so cant really comment on that method.

Cant see why not after removing the gearbox cross member but never tried it

You didnt fix it two years ago then?
