What colour is my Range Rover?

A very many years ago chap I knew was interested in a bmw 528 from a main dealer car not that old at the time, he liked the spec but not the colour dealer said pay the full price and we paint the car so ok he says and they totally stripped the car, glass out, seats, carpet the whole lot didnt matter where you looked it was same colour every where, so just maybe this one has had the same thing done to it.

Well...... all four numbers tally..... so that is a "load off". I know this isnt conclusive but theres no mention of cat c or d repair on the logbook either. Shall I spend £40 having a hpi done? or shall I spend £40 on paint and grit paper? Could this just be a factory mistake?

My compressor isnt worth mentioning.... little 2 horse cosmo, hardly powerful enough to blow up a baloon..... but it was good enough for a "play" last year.

Cosmo or Cosmos? How big is the tank (in litres)?
What type of spraygun did you use on the VW - as in suction feed or gravity feed & do you know the size of the aircap on it (should be marked on the cap)?

It shouldn’t matter. You’ve obviously had a good look round it and found nothing scary if it’s only the colour.

Exactly. The car isnt worth anything. Itll probably be another couple of decades before/if it ever is worth anything. The numbers add up so no one else has lost out as a result of me owning it. So im happy to let the sleeping dogs lie..... Ive got a choice of more modern supposedly "prestige" cars outside the house at the moment, but id still take the p38 before any of the others, so I believe its worth throwing a little love at it.

1.5 horse tankless Cosmo..... I used the cheap sprayer with 1/2l can below nozzle type gun and really nasty looking cheap pvc hose that came with it... far from ideal, but it worked... and if it all falls off next year, i shall sand it off and do it again, with my new compressor of course.

I would suggest a min 2.5 hp with 50 litre tank.
IME a 2 hp will JUST keep up with a full size HVLP gravity feed but it's working its nuts off & not ideal. You don't want to keep stopping & starting to let the tank refill. Won't run rattle guns etc. OK for dust blowgun & tyre inflation.
Friend in the same line of business has a 3hp which will also run an air sander but you're at the top end of what a 13amp socket will take & whilst some are advertised as plug & play you're better hard wiring into a cooker type circuit to avoid tripping circuit breakers.

Pot below the gun is suction feed. Need lots of air at high pressure & usually generate vast clouds of overspray as a result. Waste of paint if nothing else. A 'Don't buy'.

Go for a full size HVLP gravity fed gun with 1.3 or 1.4 setup.
You get what you pay for & cheapies are generally best avoided.
Good names are Iwata, Sata & Devilbiss - be careful of knock-offs!
My own are Iwata & Sata but £200+ so probably more than you want to pay.
2nd hand is risky, you don't know if they're OK. Spares may not be available & if they are can be expensive. Recently replaced needle & fluid tip on one of the Iwatas & was the best part of £100.
I've heard the Devilbiss FLG recommended but I've not used one. Around £100.

You will need a moisture separator. Surprising how much water results from compressing air & you don't want that suddenly appearing on your nice paint job!
You need to drain the tank from time to time.

Full bore air hose. Plastic can be a PITA in cold weather, rubber is better. A wire framed wind up garden hose carrier is good for keeping it tidy when you've finished. Scrounged both of mine from the local tip.

I have one of these types on each gun. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-4-Air-...-Gauge-Nozzle-For-Spray-Gun-Mini/123976294551 Allows for accurate setting of pressure at the gun. Setting at the compressor end doesn't take into account the drop in the hose.

Armed with information like that it would be rude not to get on with it now.. nice one. ;)

Trouble is, I have a habit of using what comes my way rather than setting out for exactly the right stuff in the first place. As luck would have it there is a compressor, gun and hose in my local auction tomorrow. Information is sparse in the catalogue but it does have the type of gun you describe (not Devilbiss or anything), and a good size tank, and I guess its at least 2 horse. At least I have a much better idea of what im looking at now... and if its crap... ill just flog it....
