I had a clattering noise from the fip on the engine à while ago and unplugging the little map sensor on the fuel filter housing stopped this from happening.
In the end the fuel pump in the tank had started to fail and eventually gave up and refused to start.
I replaced the fuel pump with a VDO unit and that was the end of the noises and the start up issues for me!
Don't be tempted by the cheap in tank pump.. You'll be dropping the tank again soon.... And don't cut a bloody hole in the body work!!
Try unplugging the map to see if the noises stop. It may shed some light in the noises, if not then further investigation is needed before you venture out in it and end up on a recovery truck ;)

Brilliant I’ll give that a try now. Should be able to upload a video of cold start today too.

I’ll give unplugging the Map senior a go. What does unplugging the sensor actually do? Might be a silly question!

Tested. No change to noise with removed MAP. I am not wondering what this rythmic clatter/vibration noise is. Every second or two.

really wish the noise came over better on video!

FIP looks suspiciously clean for a 150k milage car. No way of knowing if it’s been replaced but it does look clean.

Suspiciously clean yes. Considering condition on the ‘new’ pump it had

Does it sound like a catastrophic failure waiting to happen or a typical diesel type noise?

Definitely doesn’t sound like it’s going to die any second.

you can hear it in this video. Rythmic noise almost like a train going over tracks (volume up and watch whole way through - you can hear it at the end when I put camera back inside)

A long screwdriver, with the handle pushed into your ear and listen around the engine while it's running. Just watch out for the belts ;)
You can use socket set extensions as well. :D

Done the old screwdriver trick. No obvious chain rattle or any other noises from the block. Also checked the FIP with it (just Incase).

Found a pulley (smooth metal one) to the right of tensioner. Which is very very dry. New one on order but doesn’t appear like it would cause the noise that sounds like train tracks.

also appealed to some local forum members near by for their opinion
