got the D2 that i have pain stakenly done up from jan - sept last year, have ran it for work since sept, no problems at all,1500 miles, had a knock at my door today and a lad i sort of know wants to buy it as his v reg is fubar, rot etc, my question is after ive read, been told all these horror stories to which some i believe how good is a 2011 Land Rover Rover Discovery 3.0 SD V6 XS SUV 5dr Diesel Automatic, as an example! as i dont do that many miles, as have other vehicles! but would really like to know how reliable, problems, high milers? etc,

Maintenance on modern LRs is higher cost than earlier LRs. I found that newer LR parts are 4 or 5 times the cost, of the same part from the early versions.
These are good vehicles to drive, but not if you're on any kind of budget. They're expensive to maintain, and really expensive when they break!! The crankshafts have a habit of snapping too, which is very expensive to sort out, as it's normally a replacement engine job.

well you've told me what i already know, there is a fair few d3/4's on the road, cranks cannot go in them all, plus there is a lot of high milers for sale, i know sls and handbrake are problems, belts are a must, egr and suspension bushes, but is there a rule to a certain mileage when things really go tits up, because ive a Q3, (Mrs car), i run a Toyota van and ive a Hilux which is for my biking and the dog, but i was wanting to consolidate the d2 and hilux for 1 vehicle, but don't want any problems as the Hilux is brill to drive, Bomb proof, never goes wrong, good on juice but, a big but! it is very long, so mrs wont drive it! but would a d4 she may!

So I wasn't my time then.

I'm sure crankshaft failure is random, i.e. you don't know when or where it can happen.
Sure not all cranks will fail, but as there's no warning, it makes it a gamble. Just go into such a purchase with your eyes open, and be prepared to open your wallet wide too.

I think if you drove one you would realise why they are so popular. The d4 is a great car and if you are patient and do your homework, you will find a good one.
i have driven one numerous times, its the living with it factor, will it be as good as the old D2 , i know it wont be as good for reliability as a Hilux!

Iv got a p38 a d3 and an l322 to be honest not much trouble from any of them considering their age. Took the d3 to the new forest recently 5 adults x1 dog roof box it did what it says on the tin.
If I had room I would be keeping the D3 commercial my mates selling but iv just no more room or money

Early D4 are 6 speed gearboxes (up to 2011/12) so you could get a late D3 for less money, and less exposure to the 3.0 crank issue.
D3 is 189bhp v early D4 at 245bhp, later D4 with 8 speed went to 255bhp.

All D3 after 2006 and D4 up to about 2013 are 570 per year road tax, conversely D3/4 commercials are 300 quid ish, not the end of the world in the scheme of things, but could swing the deal.

I have ran my D3 for over 5 years now, not plain sailing, but has never let me down or cost big money to fix/repair/service, this is my 5th disco, and easily the best to date.

There are some real horror stories out there, mainly I think as people treat them as normal cars, ie ignore servicing/levels etc, which from D2 ownership you will know very well you need to keep on top of.
