I have to say (even after fourteen years of Defender TD5 ownership) this is a new one on me.

l believe the oil pump bolt can work loose and fall out, causing engine failure.

Now l have two TD5 Defenders both on over 100,000 and this is not what l wanted to hear.
Removing the sump to check for this loose bolt is another job that will have to be entrusted to my local dealer.

Does this affect all TD5’s or just the earlier ones (ours are both 2005) and is it a sufficiently serious issue that l need to book both Defenders in for the oil pump to be checked?

On D2's it seemed to be earlier ones, but a few later (circa 2003) ones have been hit.

Looks like LR did not threadlock the bolt on some engines. not sure the reason why they did not.

I checked mine on the D2 and it was fine , over 200K. that was a 2003. I reckon most of the time on the later models it is a non issue.

But it is your choice.

Cheers

That sounds like a quite expensive 'just in case' job on both vehicles.

If it were me, I'd stop worrying about it and save the money and put it right if it all goes tits up in the future when/if the bolt falls out.

I had it checked on my 2004 D2 (125k miles) just so I could stop worrying about it.
It turned out to be fine, so I can now spend money on other nice things.

OK l will probably leave it. Maybe it can get checked next time either of them need to go in for something else.

Stripped my 2001 defender td5 engine last year, 120k miles the bolt was not loose but it didn't have any locking compound on it.
Fitted a new bolt torqued it up and put a bit of extra locktite on it just in case.

Mines a 2000 model. Oil pump bolt wasn't threadlocked, but wasnt lose either. But I suppose it could start loosening at any point. So I'm glad it's done now, was also due an oil change anyway
