Hi All, so new to the land of Land Rover... ( did once have a rusty disco!!) anyway - I'm planning a full rebuild of lovely rusty TD5!!! and am currently scouring all the main guys for parts, but wondered if anyone had opinions on who's best for what or who to avoid etc... any help and advice is welcomed!
 
YRM for all the irritating aluminium body panels that have succumbed to galvanic corrosion
Any thing else wherever has OEM at the lowest price!
 
Thanks I found yrm as have a few bits that need replacing. Just wondered if there was any better quality parts suppliers out there or key companies to look at first.

I use paddocks as there website is pretty good for finding the right part. Nothing against other sellers but always used paddocks until they mess up. Not happened yet.
 
Just wondered if there was any better quality parts suppliers out there or key companies to look at first.

As a general rule all of the different parts supplies (paddocks, craddocks, lrdirect, etc) will all supply the same things as they are suppliers not manufacturers. They will have in stock the same part made by different people and to different standards. The difference in parts quality comes when you select which part to buy:
Unless specified as OEM or Genuine the part will be a pattern copy of an original part, this means a company has got hold of an original and made their own version. Different companies are better at this than others and the quality can vary from brand to brand and part to part! (I know that is not very helpful)
OEM is "Original equipment Manufacture" this means that it is made by the same company to the same standards as the original part supplied to land rover
Genuine is the same as above but with a land rover logo on the box and a higher price because of it.

Based on the above it does not matter who supplies the part because the quality is dictated by the part you select (hence my original comment about choosing supplier on price but the part on OEM)
However there are some pattern parts that are very good quality and a fraction of the cost of OEM, a quick search of the forum will give you a good idea if the pattern part is any good. (e.g. pattern tdi lift pumps fail in a few weeks and need to be OEM, but britpart shocks are very good quality, very cheap, and perform/last well)

As said above the best thing is get hold of a parts manual for you vehicle, either buying one, or downloading one online. This then allows you to search for the specific part that you need and you can then see all the different versions available. You can then research the quality of the aftermarket vs OEM and make a decision individually based on the quality vs cost. As a general rule for what I do critical parts are OEM, engine parts are OEM, brake parts are OEM, drive train parts are usually OEM (couple of exceptions e.g. drive flanges), everything else is aftermarket pattern parts, and nothing is genuine because the price is far to high!

That depends on the body panel you are looking for. Repair yours (YRM) or second hand is usually the best unless it is for doors, these I would buy new replacements for and, although personal preference, for the front doors I would buy two piece series doors rather than the correct one one piece doors. new door bottoms and then fit the all aluminium door tops from either s/h military or new rocky mountain.

Thank you for this, really useful and highly helpful. On the LR parts when I went to search through their catalogue nothing was really coming up, but I will preserve and look for a parts catalogue for reference
 
Anything britpart with the letter G on the end are tidy quality.
Britpart without the G can be er hit and miss!
Island4x4 are pretty good.

Once you have the part numbers it is easy.
 
Had a look at the sticky - looks like it’s up to 1995 - any suggestions to find a td5 version? Mines the 10p later 2001


You might find that is about when everything started to go computerised, so there may be no online parts books.

Good summary, but the above is not quite true. OEM has no legal basis and anyone can sell anything under that label so long as it was once used by some manufacturer somewhere. In many cases it is not the same as the Genuine Land Rover part.

A good example is propshaft UJs. The standard sized UJ is available aftermarket (v. cheap and rubbish) for a few quid, varying options of OEM up to around £20-25 and genuine at about £50. The higher end of the OEM ones are the same as the genuine ones but the cheaper ones are not, they are however made by GKN or whoever and so can be classed as ‘OEM’. The fact is that GKN make the same fitment UJ for many applications and to different standards to suit, the expensive OEM ones and the genuine ones have better seals and bigger bearings. Likewise if you buy a Bosch starter motor the genuine Land Rover one has better sealing than the cheaper but still legitimately OEM one.

Thanks for the additional info, same as any other oem then for other cars etc - you pay for what you get within reason.

I know I’m going to need “a lot” of new bits! So just wanted to know if there was anyone in particular that should be avoided. I will canvas some opinions as she un folds herself!!!
