New alternator s3 88

Hello all,

Just a quick one bought a new alternator for Effy the s3 88, how ever the charge light stays on no matter what, checked the wires from starter (all getting power) apart from the charge light when tested with circuit bulb, I’ve checked the belt and the battery which does go above 12.6v (also pretty newish) can some point me in the right direction of what I need to do next or is it an alternator problem?!

charge light wire should have a voltage with ignition on earthing it should put the light on

Nopes so I’m unsure where to go next as it’s goes straight to the fuse via bulb ‍

it should come from an ignition source ie fuse to bulb the alt, current flows through to the alt putting light on it goes to d+ terminal

Right okay, which comes from the white wires to the fuses then charge light to alternator? It has a brand new loom from auto sparks which is followed from various wiring diagrams, so should this come the same side as the thick brown wires (which it is at the minute) or the accessories side?

Did it work before the new loom



White wire from fuse to bulb then yellow/ brown check to small terminal
Is alt earthed well
And have you revved it , when I fitted mine it was red on tickover and needed a good rev to get it to start charging

Yeh done all that held revs for a good few minutes and nopes hence why I needed a new one, as far as I’m aware it’s earthed well as it light is lit and not broken, (I hope) and that wiring diagram is one I’ve followed when rewiring

As James said if you pull the yellow brown wire off alt does it go out and if earthed back on
What’s batt voltage not running and when running
Are the big spade connections on alt good
Have you cleaned up the battery and starter earths have you got an engine to body earth

Battery voltage stayed the same when turned off and running
It’s a brand new alternator and all earths are good that was first thing we checked
And yeh when my dad was checking the wiring the light went out when unplugged and back on when the circuit bulb was on it? I’m gonna check all earths again when I can but the light just doesn’t seem to go off

its quite common to get a faulty replacement if its wired correctly ,take it back and get another

does this mean the light came back on when the brown yellow wire was earthed to body or when reconnected to alternator

I hope not, I bought a new alternator over a year ago but haven't fitted it yet.

It has a 19j fitted with the 3
Pin connections so can only really go one way
