Hi there,

My 90 2.5td starts fine, but blue smoke's a cloud and runs a bit rough for about 10 seconds - then it all evens out and runs fine except for the odd slight misfire and when it does that hiccup misfire the exhaust puts out a small chuff of blue smoke. If you drive off straight away a sensation of holding back intermittently happens, I suspect because its chuffing a blip of smoke again. After a few minutes this stops and it drives perfectly, pulls ok (needs cog down on hills but can do 65 no problem at all). It does not smoke once all these shannagans over, even when checking in mirrors/following headlights etc. If you stop the engine it will restart no smoke, unless you leave it for a while, the longer you leave it the greater the cloud. Mild coat of oil in bottom of air filter housing and nothing in main filter paper

Would this be valve stem oil seals or worn valve guides? Is it ok to leave it like this (apart from a bit of oil consumption of course):)

I don't know an 19J which doesn't smoke on start up?! In fact I don't know any diesel over 15 years which doesn't smoke on start up!! Don't worry - 99% its fine.

Hello,
Understood LOL, however, this is quite a bit for way too long. I don't appear to be losing oil so wonder if this could be diesel - its def blue, not black but does smell of diesel rather than oil too. I noticed today going down long hil'sl on overun that it does the same chuffing blue, quite a bit in fact - not uphill or on straights (not that overun really works for long going uphill eh...)

I will try parking it on steep uphill and see if I get same result - could be forward valve stem oil seals on cyls 1/2?

Didn't seem to make any difference - However, what is noticeable is that if I start it and immediately pull away the smoke stops straight away - whereas if I leave it standing and ticking over it does it for several minutes - anyone else had this?

There is something wrong with it mate, does the smoke smell sour? Until you ascertain the cause of the smoke , IE. oil, water or fuel you will be ****ing in the wind I'm afraid as it could be any number of things. My 19j is old and doesn't smoke like that, if it did I'd be investigating it.

My mates did this but worse, it would smoke for about a mile then clear, turned out in his case to be turbo oil seals:)

Mine did the same when i bought it, cloud of black smoke from cold start.
Try switching ignition on 2 or 3 times till glow plug light goes out then start it, if it doesn't smoke the glow plugs need changing.
Changed mine 3 weeks ago and no smoke on start up.

I have an NA non turbo that puffed a bit and sounded tad hunting when first fired up.
I have replaced the glow plugs as found one was fooked and now runs sweet straight away.

Also did the head gasket changed valve oil seals and other stuff but am sure it was one cylinder just wasnt firing quite right to start with.
Also added 2 stroke to the fuel (see the big thread on this) and exhaust is pretty clean even when starting, no smoke when cold on tickover.

My old 19J used to smoke a lot when cold, and it's something I see all the time with older generation marine engines.. In fact my old 19J could lay a good fog for the first few minutes on startup. If is still smokes a lot when fully warmed - that'll not be so great...

My of 19J sadly had a shot crack due the crank pully being loose - so I decided to have the engine rebuilt by my old local Indie ("Goodson and Smith", Andy and Clive are sorley missed round here). Anyways, with a fully sorted engine it still used to smoke when cold.. I just drove and enjoyed it! Miss the old beast..

Hi I know this is an old post but did you resolve this as mine is showing the same symptoms

Hi - Yes I did by changing the injectors in the end (sorry, I thought I'd posted this resolution but didn't ). However, I did manage to reduce it by probably 50% by using a diesel system cleaner called "Diesel Clean Up" by Wynns. You add it to the fuel filter and it runs up straight away rather than adding it to the fuel tank (that by the way is how it says to use it on the can). Try that first? My 90 has since moved on so couldn't say if anything else developed.

Thank you for the reply I will start with the diesel clean up first thanks again,Mark

When did it have a filter last? (fuel), any visible signs of fuel leaking? I normally spray paraffin around my engine from a spray bottle, let it soak in for a minute or two then throw a bucket of hot water with fairy liquid in it around the engine, this will clear any damp oil or diesel leaving you with a nice clean engine, when it has dried off leaks are easy to spot. Obviously dont throw water into the air inlet.

I have an issue with mine, its doing exactly what yours is doing, its due to air in the fuel. However if you are experiencing a lack of power at first it could be fuel pressure, or a lack of it. This could be a blocked/worn fuel filter or tired lift pump. It still could be the injectors but a random misfire wont hold back the power.

Put an additive in the diesel an made a big difference cruising now at 70mph and 50mph uphill on motorway. Big reduction on smoke at start up I’ve got an new lift pump which I am going to change and will do another diesel clean in couple of weeks

That is good going for a 19j! :)

I have had good results with diesel additives. Lot of people say it is snake oil, but I don't think so.
