Series 3 Jack Stop

Been rebuilding front axle on my S3 shorty. PO have abused everything, so there are a lot of new parts going in. In the parts book I found part number 90519206 which is described as a jack locator stop. Is this there just to help you put the jack in the right place and not damage the bottom of the chrome ball? Or is there some other function?

Yeah - I've seen that in various places too, but I think that is a mistake, because the steering stop brackets are clearly these things (508175):

The jack stop does not get involved in the steering at all.

As far as I can make out, it just hangs down below the axle and gets bashed on rocks, but presumably Land Rover put it there for some other reason.

Yes it does a bit, but it isn't!

Here's a photo of one of them so we can all go "oh I see, mine doesn't have any of those..."
They look a bit pointless to me, but it'd be good to get other opinions.

just googling and I think you’re correct it might stop a particular jack slipping and damaging chrome ball

Yep - That's what I'm thinking. The old Shelley jack I have sits nicely under the flange on the back of the chrome ball and this bracket would indeed stop it slipping off sideways and hitting the surface of the ball itself.

Other than that, it is just a rock/stump catcher! I wonder if people typically remove them and leave them off. I couldn't find any photos of them fitted!

There was none on mine I use a disco jack under spring plate

I know this is an old thread but I am doing my axles and I found one of these on my front axle, just one and it was bent. I've not seen any others fitted either.

I ended up fitting one to each end. I picked that if they are genuinely useful then there should be one each side. If not then that's a few quid down the pan.....
