The new defender!

The main dealer eggsperience in the uk has gone a bit more upmarket in recent years. Free cakes, tea etc. They will even provide water for yer dog. Mine provides a person with the job title "host" who ensures you get the best eggsperience during yer visit and that they meet yer every eggspectation. I got a LR balloon from mine and some fold out card board LR models.

Where are you? I dont give a **** about the new Defender, but that sounds like some grub worth going for.

Aha, that's another reason for me viewing on the 10th Dec...but I'm hoping for canapes, hot sausage rolls, mature alpine cheese and a damned good Burgundy + a weekend's test drive. Anything less and I'll be very disappointed. Though guess as now owned by TATA I'll be lucky if offered a cold onion bhaji and two day old gone soggy poppadom!

Seen it last night and thought it looks a more natural upgrade to a disco 4 rather than the 5 but not a defender. Very expensive for what it is and tbh was a bit underwhelmed. Going to get deposit back and wait to see Jim Radcliffe's motor.

I’ll be looking at it at the end of next week. Local dealership is doing a launch event with fizz; no riff raff :p:D I may be the only one turning up in the genuine article and I’ll be parking with pride, as there’s no way I’m parting with my Defender 110. I’m going for the fun of it.

Went to see one today purely out of interest. When I saw the videos and pictures I was quite optimistic. Have seen and sat and played around a bit it’s basically a less posh, slightly tacky plastic version of a Range Rover.

Got told off for poking and playing around with all the knobs and fixings. One of the guys actually said ‘be careful of that, it’s delicate’. Not what you want to hear when buying a defender.

Here’s some pics

Lordy, that's not what one wants to hear. My viewing is on the 10th, the Landy's off the road where I'm rebuilding the front end so the Stealership will have to suffer the ignominy of having a Subaru Forster parked centre front of its showroom :) But I will be wearing my muddy Chameaux...they'll probably ask me to take them off before getting into the Defender. I'll take pics of wellies next to car and mis-matching socks..."must remember one green, one red, both with holes through big toe..." ;)

Regarding the issue of damage... I don't think it's a case of it being delicate. It's brande new and polished up to shine is the show room. Any damage reduces its value or the dealer has to pay/fix. Snap something oft like the indicater stalk and theres an instant bill of over £100 for repair. Open the door and get in with a key in yer hand and you risk scratching the door and punchuring the seat material.

I just got excited, Carmagazine has a 'hands-on' review of the 2019 defender ... I know right, finally a review ... oh oh ... it's a review of the LEGO defender, in off-road terrain and everything ... yep, I have found a review of a toy defender before the real one, almost ****ed myself laughing. In all seriousness though, the Lego one does look like an impressive performer !
Have I missed something or is there still no independent review of the new defender, you know, the one that was was released almost three months ago.
It's starting to feel like Land Rover is trying to hide something ... maybe it is actually really delicate :)

I suppose my point is that items shouldn’t be that delicate if just fulfilling their normal function. It’s not like I was taking a crow bar to anything. Just opening things that can be opened, pushing buttons that can be pushed etc etc

But yes I can imagine they’d like to keep it shiny

When is the military version being released?

I did wonder when this Q? would arise. A friend and I were discussing exactly the same a few weeks ago. We came to the conclusion that unless LR produce a "military grade only" version LR have no chance of selling into the MOD as the new Defender is simply too complex; and no other military organisation will buy a combat vehicle that can only work when all 85 ecu's are fully functioning.

This led to the Q? If LR/TATA Group still see a significant global market within international defence they will need to offer a C21st combat ready vehicle...and this may not be the new Defender as we know it. If still a Defender, albeit a properly stripped out/down and armoured up version, could this lead to a lower cost Defender? Maybe even a Defender with wind down windows, no ECU's and no ridiculous over priced accessories list? If the answer is yes, then we could see a new Defender without the fluffy guff added to the current offering. If the answer is no, this leaves a market wide open for competitors to walk into, doors wide open. Which means Jim 'Grenadier' Ratcliffe's £600M investment could be a very smart investment. I for one can not wait to view the Grenadier...

JLR/Tata, have specifically stated that their target audience is not your stereo typical "working" person. I know they are bringing out a commercial, but even that will be too technical for too much rough dirty work. I can't see one on a building site, or in the woods with the Forestry commission. But that's me, I could be wrong.

The market is to small and would not be profitable

The military want to pay less. Why build them a vehicle when yer can sell the same one to other peeps at a higher price. Tratters have never been bomb proof which has been a requirement for some years. The reality is the military would be betterer oft buying...

A Freelander :p

The market is to small and would not be profitable

That's the real point. Is the market too small for LR and/or Ineos to produce a simplified Defender/Grenadier? It's generally accepted that margins are lower when supplying basic equipment to the military. But with this comes economies of scale and increased purchasing power for the non-military vehicles + greater margin with upgrade specs and add-on military equipment. Personally, I'm intrigued to see which way LR and MOD will go. If not a Defender, what else would the MOD buy...something from Germany?
