This is rapidly becoming an interesting thread, steam coming from the front - check to see if you have an engine pre heater, under the battery box if I'm correct, kicks in at 5c to help warm up cabin quicker, burns diesel hence the steam/smoke, exhaust fumes coming out of left hand side front wheel well.

Thank you for that mate! It does indeed have mismatched tyres the dealer had probably swapped the front to back or just replaced 2! They have agreed to sort it out. The garage I took it to say the rear diff is gone. But they did say that there is a Haldex unit that had something to do with the front steering issue? So I assumed I need 2? My mistake. So I need matching tyres a rear diff and Haldex unit all new. And should be ok? Is there any other issues that could of occurred? The camber on the back wheels looks weird like a lowered euro style vw
So I heard back from the garage they have replaced the rear diff. The haldex unit is ok was all caused by 4x4 kicking in and out. They say the tyres only have to match in size and width etc not same make? I’m assuming tread pattern being slightly different won’t mess with this? I’m going to struggle getting the dealer to swap all the tyres I reckon

If it were an F1 with its VCU, I'd say definitely get the tyres matching on make and model. I'm not so sure with the F2 and its Haldex - but if the garage says that the Haldex is OK and the diff damage was caused by "the 4x4 kicking in" you have to question something. The system is designed for the 4x4 to 'kick in' - that's exactly what it is there for o_O So something isn't adding up right, especially on a 2011 car with the stronger diff.

This is a perfect thread for showing how mismatching tyres can throw the transmission on a F1, and these on the face of it looked like the same tyre from the same manufacturer...

Hope they replaced the diff with a decent one, not one off a < 2010 car they found at a breakers!

I had a 2011 FL2 le sport auto and the rear diff bearings went very quickly a message direct to Landrover and a phone call or two got the main dealer to fix it foc with new bearings etc. I did experience oil been blown out of the diff afterwards and it took 3 visits to sort but eventually ended up ok, sadly I lost my FL2 a year ago at the same time as my job and this year bought a very tired FL1 TD4 not without its problems but very cheap to fix yourself with cheap parts. The one common thing to both models was that there is a love of these vehicles and great support on this site if You need it hope Your sorted now all the best, AL.

It’s in at bell 4x4 and only been looked at by them today and new diff fitted I’m assuming they wouldn’t of had time to source a second hand diff. It’s under warranty so I’m not paying but can I still ask for a receipt for the part purchased? Just to prove it is new?

Bell do a refurb diff with a stronger bearing fitted maybe that is better than a standard diff
