I've not had my Freelander 2 for too long but it has developed a whine from the transfer box (its definitely the transfer box before some tells me its the diff, tyres or a wheel bearing) . I'm looking to remove and rebuild the transfer box but cannot find much information on the rebuilding of this. I would be very grateful for any information on this, mainly the torque settings for the pre load nut on the pinion side or if someone can advise me of a workshop manual that covers the rebuilding of the transfer box. I have a couple of manuals but they don't cover this. Thanks in advance if someone can help.
 
Hi recon unit is £400 to £500, rebuild kit with bearings and seals is £120 using timkin bearings. I'm quite capable of the spanner work and have the tooling just looking for the preload data.
 
Possible solution provide no locking compound was used. Or is it a case of a set pre-load then increased in steps measuring the force used to turn the shaft till the correct force is needed to spin the shaft.

preload as a rule of thumb is a thou per inch diameter of bearing with taper bearings,used bearings dont need preload but cant have free play, is you tighten nut until you can start to feel some resistance generally that is ok for shafts etc with taper bearings
 
Ok thanks for that. There is however a collapsible spacer between 2 of the bearings which is designed to collapse at the pre determined torque setting the correct pre load. this is an extract from one of the manuals I have but its does not specify the torque setting.

"A collapsible spacer is located between the outer taper roller bearing and a shoulder on the pinion gear. The collapsible
spacer holds the bearing in alignment and also collapses under pressure applied to the pre-load nut. This allows the
pre-load nut to be tightened to a predetermined torque, which collapses the spacer, setting the correct bearing pre-load
and the correct meshing of the pinion gear and crown wheel drive gear teeth."

i've also had a look and couldn't find the data , thought there might have been a manual around with the torque settings

I hear noize from the feont part of the vehicle when turning to the left. Even at the slightest turn to the left, the noize is heard. When driving straight forward, in reverse or when turning to the right, everything is fine. Any thoughts on this? We replaced the front passenger side wheel baring but the noize is still here.

Is the noise proportional to engine revs or vehicle speed?
