Hello Chaps and Chapesses

It has been a very long time since I have graced these hallowed pages.

One word..

WORK!

However my last enquiry was regards a steering column issue. That is still the case, daughters Freelander gathering dust in my garage. Needed so welding on the inner sill, that’s sorted. Steering column though?? It has movement in what I suspect is a bearing(lower maybe if there is more than one?)

My question is can that bearing be replaced/do Land Rover supplies parts or is it a replacement column? Just watched a video of a bloke changing the column.. no great shakes but would rather replace the bearing than buy a second hand unit only for it to have the same issue.

Any advice most welcome. My daughter deserves her car back and I need it gone so I can move around my garage freely..(also, it hurts me to see it sat there)

Cheers in advance

Best

Malcolm

What model is it? Have got a spare good TD4 column. Not sure if it is the same as other models. Also check it is column not uj at the bottom. Pm if interested.

Thanks Andy it’s a 2004 TD4 HSE.

It’s definitely the bearing above the UJ. Some significant movement. Will have a think about the column away at work at the moment so multi tasking..(as a man.. not a good thing)

Thanks for the reply

The column isn't known to wear, so maybe yours has some corrosion from a spillage over the steering wheel?

I expect the bush isn't available separately, although I imagine I could make one up, if I had a column to copy.

Hello Nodge

Many thanks for the reply and input. Will check for any signs of corrosion or spillage when I get to it. I had a look-see earlier but there doesn't appear to be any cause other than ‘wear and tear’. When I get it out I will gave a better idea. There is a video on YouTube with the poster swapping out his old one for a newer one.. seems to have the same issue as mine. Will let you know when I get to it...

Many thanks again

Best

Malcolm
