Defender values

A bit of a different question regarding values.
I wonder if l should try to arrange agreed value cover, as l am concerned about the value that my insurance will put on our Landy, should there be a total loss.
Where do the insurance companies get their values from? The TD5 and older aren’t in the trade guides such as Glass’s

The guide in LRO is up the pole. It says a 2006 90 TD5 SW in the best condition is worth £15,500 which is about right.
But for a 2005, same vehicle/condition, it’s £11,500
Also it doesn’t differentiate between a SW, CSW and XS
Where the XS could be worth £1-2,000 more than the basic SW
It doesn’t help me to sleep soundly with the level of theft at the moment.

You could try looking on ebay, use the advanced search feature, tick sold listings and see what people have actually paid for a Defender.

Would the insurance company accept these Ebay sale prices as representative of what ours is worth?
To the untrained eye a £8,000 Defender can look as good as a £12,000 one.

I would say so and if not a k or two on a solicitor will get it sorted, I am led to beleive they even argue about agreed value motors.

Ins co's are going to use every trick in the book to get out of paying - why else are we still living in a damp mouldy caravan over 7 years into a 10 WEEK repair to our home ? Thank you so much No Flamin Use M*************
( oh yeah, that's only my opinion by the way ( might be shared by a few others though! ))

Agreed value is essential - even on a eurobox IMHO - Car insurance is more of a scam than other insurance - as the companies insist that the value of the asset decreases over time ...... then write it orft to "encourage you " into a newer one, which, surprise surprise, costs more, and depreciates faster ! keeps the car makers in business though!!



Unfortunately, the only way forward seems to be to go legal and/or use your own loss assessor from the start of the claim.

I'm not convinced e bay is a great tool for this. Many vehicles are sold through the classified ads, at a price agreed off the site, rather than the auction area. LRO website may give a better idea if you keep an eye on it.

Which is why I suggested using the 'sold listing' option in the advanced search it will show what people are prepared to pay not what people so asking for their vehicles, too many people are asking far too much at the moment for very average of even project Defenders IMHO.

Yes i can read thanks. I mentioned an alternative as I don't believe in the scheme of things that many good examples of LRs are sold via e bay auction.

I think you are right, the better ones seem to be on sites like Autotrader.
That’s where we found ours.

I would imagine the best ones are sold via word of mouth.
Same as boats, a few have sold where we keep ours and Im pretty sure not one was advertised outside of the club.

The best examples of anything tend to be owned by a small band of enthusiasts, who tend to know each other.

For my money, word of mouth is best, the nearest online equivalent is LRO website and mag.

I tried a wanted advert on all the LR forums but had no replies at all
Some of the best examples are also at dealers but prices are high, IRO £20,000 for a low mileage TD5 SW/XS
Many aren’t selling at that money, some of the ones l looked at in August are still for sale.
